Ah, excuse me for using an old MechWarrior 4 term. Means Circle of Death, and was used because many MW4 mech brawls ended up with two mechs circling each other exhcanging fire until one finially caved in. Sometimes you might make four or five rotations, shooting and twisting to spread damage then twisted back in.

Those went away with MWO. Long range shooting and lots of mechs that can kill you in two shots or leg you in one plus other reasons.

But I finally had a one v one COD two days ago. An enemy warhammer strayed out to one side tryng for flank shots. I moved in with my Rifleman. A screen of buildings and I guess the rest of the battle kept anyone from interfering. (was expecying some lights to show up and shoot one or both of us in the back).

We made two and a half full revolotions around each other at about 80 meters or so before I got the kill shot in. I was shot up pretty bad as a result- but it was worth it to finally have a one on one brawl like the old days.

Well, maybe in another four years I will get another such duel.....

One of my most memorable moments was in CB when I, in my stock CPLT-K2, had a short range brawl with 4 enemy (2 lights and 2 mediums) on Forest Colony. I won! Posted Image

Even though I prefer long range combat...hence the K2 Posted Image

You should fear an AC20.

But in MWO you do not.

Instead you fear being slowly taken apart at a distance by lazers.

Or if you get in close, being quickly alpha'd by lazers.

I make it a point to avoid CoDs and, if I get in one, to break it.

CoDs are bad; let the other guy circle predictably and receive my gunfire accordingly.

Man, I miss those old fight styles.

It's also common in the battletech pods.

True, but we did try to teach our pilots more advanced fighting patterns. And it does depend on if you are playing Firestorm in the Tesla II pods or if you meant BT 4.10 and earlier. But still, with full foot pedal/throttle control, it was way easier to maneuver and you could reliably pull of a circle and still make it a bit unpredictable with good throttle control.

Legging the other guy didn't hurt your chances either. ;)

You see it more in the arena maps, and when the pods are at conventions now, because it's the easiest concept to get, after learning not to just run into the other guy. ;)

1v1 light/medium matches in private lobbies end in circling most of the time. Most people will have premium time from this event (need 2 for 1v1), so find a friend who wants to duel and go for it.

Sounds to me like two people making a rookie mistake.

You clearly never watched the old Battletech championships on Scifi back in the 90's...

COD's used to be top tier play.

Back in the day CODs were hard to avoid when mechs closed for dakka combat brawling. There wasn't a ton of cover in MW4 and the speeds were relatively close. Your options were to stand still or move to one side. Or face hug them to cause damage when you explode. COD was a means to avoid face hugging.

I wish I could DFA. Have landed on a few enemy mechs but usually I just ending up becoming a hat for them rather than hurting them.

Circle of Death^

Except in MWO the green guy standing next to the goal shoots #20 while 20 is engaged with 4.

MWO is far more coordinated and deathball-y to allow CoD to exist. On top of that you have all these rocks you get stuck on AND players smart enough to predict where their target is going to be.

I've come to redefine a CoD as Circumference of Death, as once you make a full circle you will be dead.

DFA is possible. I was chasing a light over a building in Frozen City in mt dwf w jj, dropped off the roof, and bounced. Then I heard the 'target destroyed' message. Grinned like an idiot for the rest of the game.
