I am new to reddit, and new to MWO, but a long time StarTrek Online player, and the reddit for STO is always nice and helpful.
What is up with this?

MWO has a long and nasty history between the staff and community, and sadly you are on the receiving end of it.
MWO is a FPS version of a Table Top game called Battle Tech, but unlike the table top version, MWO has deviated from the source material in an attempt to create an E-sport game, that due to mechanics may be less then well received as such. This attempt has infuriated many of the founding members of this product, some even going as far to say that this is not the product that they were sold, but rather Call of Duty with mechs.
In an attempt to clear the boards of some of the more vocal members against this product, there were mass bans, even a member of the staff publicly insulting the player base of MWO, leaving mean to have hurt feelings and a lot of anger towards MWO and staff, this fury can sometimes be directed at new members to MWO, sadly.

In many ways, reddit usually reflects community opinions better than official forums due to less censorship - and by far not only with MWO.
The downvoting however is a constant and real problem on reddit - nobody ever uses the function correctly.

This is not a pay to win game, everything you can buy with $$$ you can eventually buy with in game currency, you just have to have a little patience.

So because a few dumb people on reddit said it was, you take that as the entirety of Outreach reddit? Where most comp players roam, where most said it was disappointing?

Agreed, I find reddit much better place to actually discuss the game then here.
Yup. The main culprit has to do with the how the two work. On reddit, troll and otherwise terrible posts are downvoted and filtered out of the front page. On forums troll and other types of sh*tposts are constantly bumped up to the front page because they get lots of replies. For example, this thread.

I think it's because "DOA" is the theme of the forums, and Outreach looks down on the forums as uncouth and uneducated/noobish/scrubby. So when somebody posts an Outreach topic about a new mech being disappointingly weak and driving them away from pre-ordering other mechs, they're all thinking "Well, I could have told you that before you even pre-ordered it. What did you expect, mechs aren't worth the money if they aren't near the top of the food chain at release?"
In general, I find reddit a much better userbase than the forums, tbh. The forums have a significantly higher proportion of irrational thinkers.
