A bad Lightning strike hit my house (I think)
And took out my central AC and PC and TV converter box

So looking to repair or replace my PC

What's the budget lookin' like?

For the graphics card, I'd wait until at least later this month. AMD is coming out with their Polaris cards which are aimed at excellent value sub-$200. The RX 480 ($200) will be considerably more powerful than that 260X, but if you're looking for cheaper cards they should be bringing something along the lines of an RX 470 and RX 460, too.

For memory, I'd suggest just getting a solid 8 gig kit (or 16, if you have the extra money) from one of the major companies. G Skill, Crucial and Corsair are all good brands. Memory tends to either work fine or not at all, but you don't want to get a cheap kit only to have it be dead.

You didn't post a budget so I can't really put together a full setup for you, but I'd definitely say to not buy any current graphics card until Polaris comes out, unless you can find a really great deal or simply can't wait a month.

I do not know if you checked in to it but usually your homeowners insurance policy and some renter's insurance will cover the loss due to lightning strikes.

Yeah my deductible is $1300 so after those jack holes depreciate things and then low ball you

It’s not worth filing unless it’s for big money like a roof

As to what’s bad the LAN cable had burn marks on the PC side but not on the time warner internet box side

The 22” monitor PS was burnt up and replacing the power supply with another 19V power supply did not work so the monitor is shot

That’s all I know
The items I don’t know for sure are the DDR memory the I5 chip and the video card oh and my 2 hard drives

I live in Tampa, Florida. It is widely known as the North American lightning capitol. We get a lot of lightning strikes here. I have an APCC UPS and I have never suffered a catastrophic failure of my PC due to a lightning strike.

Protect yourself from Mother Nature. She can be cruel at times !

Well I am stuck

I bought a new Mother board, hard drive and I7 chip

Kept the case, PS, DVD drive and video card

With my original HD the computer won’t start windows (I left my windows 7 disk in CO, I am in TX)

I did manage to use my old lap top HD so the machine boots up to vista
From there I ran check disk on my windows 7 hard drive and some areas where repaired

But trying to get windows 7 to start is still not working
It’s a real pain in the neck I feel like the answer is just out of reach

Is Win 10 still free? If so, download it to your new hard drive and run Win 10. Then hookup your old Win 7 drive and recover whatever info you need.

I can’t get on the internet with this thing yet so I can’t upgrade to 10

I assumed you could get on the Internet via your laptop. If you can, then you can download Windows 10 and save it to a thumb drive?

I am not sure if Microsoft is still offering a Win 10 upgrade or new install for free. Have you researched this offer from Microsoft?

I don't understand what you're saying here

You bought a new drive (HDD)
But it won't install Windows 7 on it?
So you used an old HDD? To boot into Vista?


Or are you saying you're using an old HDD with 7 on it, and it won't boot up in the new system?
Is it the HDD with the lighting strike?

One a 500 GB and the 2nd my old lap top hard drive which was loaded with vista

My 500 GB HD had windows 7
I also bought a new 1 TB HD but I haven’t used it yet

When I installed my old windows 7 HD the PC will not boot to windows
I assume it’s because the mother board is tied to the operating system but because the drivers are set
To the original mother board it won’t boot up

I then booted my PC to the windows vista HD and ran check disk on the windows 7 HD
Errors where found and repaired but the new PC wont boot up using my old windows 7 HD
It gets stuck on a repair and restore page

I have a back-up of my windows 7 HD but I left my original windows 7 disk (with its product key)
Back in CO,

I can boot to windows vista but the new mother board has a newer Ethernet and new USB connections
So I don’t have the drivers to get them to work

Spent several hours trying to down load windows vista to the "Killer e2200 Gigabit Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.30)
“With hope I could get the PC hooked up to the internet

Aiden it looks like you have to buy windows 10 but can still free upgrade from windows 7

This used to be an easy problem to solve (back in the day) but not any more

I might be to late to this thread, but if your windows 7 install had service pack 1 on it, which it most likely did, you can not fix start up issues on it with a standard windows 7 install disc. You have to have a disc that has service pack 1 also on it. You can have a 32bit version or a 64 bit version install disc, but it has to have service pack 1 installed on it or repair disk won't work. Hope this helps

Vista disc's won't work either, however, you should be able to install windows 10/upgrade if you don't run into the no keyboard/mouse issue that often happens when trying to upgrade from 7
