Seriously. People can call out locations of enemy UAVs that are over the heads of friendly mechs, and nobody will try to shoot them down. I get the ones that are under the UAV not shooting it, they can't physically shoot it. But the snipers hiding way in the back... do they think they are so important that they can't take the time to help the team by shooting an enemy uav?

I always shoot at them when I can find them in the sky. Sometimes I get a radar return on them, often not. Which I guess means they are out of radar range - which means out of my weapon range too probably.

Because they have no weapon systems that can bare, ?
Because they can't see it ?
Because they are heavily engaged ?
Because they are dumb ?

Situational awareness is a scarce commodity in MWO. You can scream that there is something there in VoiP, and 90% of the team will either ignore you or look the wrong direction. My cat has better situational awareness, and she can be totally oblivious to a piece of food that is right in front of her face while I'm pointing at it.

I read on here once that there is a bug/feature that allows lasers to knock down UAV's at any range. I don't know if it is true or not, but in practice I have never shot at a UAV and not destroyed it and I shoot at them if I see them no matter what.

IMO most new players dont even know what they are..so unless you yell out on comms they wont look to the sky when they are focused on looking for a mech to shoot...IF you do yell it out make sure you tell them exactly where it is..never leave room for ppl to think or they will get it wrong.Posted Image

UAV's are easiest to target using your rangefinder.

Normally, shooting sky gets you an infinity symbol for range. Just slide the crosshairs around near the UAV until you get a range ping.

Fire. Dead UAV.

On the other hand, many 'Mechs can't easily hit something that high over their heads, and UAVs have ECM to boot. Unless I'm a fair distance away, often I can't get a clean shot at a UAV.

Another fun thing to do with UAVs is to get your rangefinder on it and... drop an artillery strike. The smoke may or may not appear on the UAV, but the strike will be centered directly below the UAV. If enemy mechs pop it behind cover, you can still smash the hell out of them with a UAV based artillery strike.

I'm still amazed that people will look around for the entire UAV duration in normal vision mode complaining they can't see it, when they show up perfectly in thermal, regardless of how bright the sky background is.

I have a personal limit of shooting down three.

After that I leave the dimwits to learn the hard way.

They just aren't paying attention is all. People usually shoot them if they see them but won't look up to look for them.

*This trick may not have the intended results if said UAV was launched by a light mech charging through your ranks. ;)

You joke, but actually... There is nothing stopping you from putting an artillery strike on a FRIENDLY UAV. I've done it a few times when I see the enemy team is walking directly under one. :D

The answer is simple. Most mechs zombie mode it and stack in torsos. Even supposing you have arm weapons, you have to first notice it, which is hard when its right above you, and you have to aim for it, which leaves you vulnerable. its also pretty hard to hit when you're basically shooting at it from the upper edge of your screen, because thats as far as your vision goes while you're aiming with arms on free mode.

And hence why shooting them down should earn you more CBills and XP than currently. You are many times saving players from LURMed to death, or insta cored by a lazor-alpha-meta builds waiting for them to peek.

But, we ask too much....
