Hey fellow pilots,
I've been whacking away at unlocking my Awesome 9M with its canon loadout, and I have a pretty good time playing it in pub even though there's really nothing to recommend the Awesome in MWO. The Atlas-size target it presents, the way PPCs aren't pulling their own tonnage compared to other weapons, pretty much everything. What are some of your favorites from TT or the earlier games that just don't work in MWO, but you still like to dust off and play sometimes?

I've got one of my favorites from TT in game now (Warhammer), and she does alright, not a metawhore in anyway shape or form, but pulls respectable numbers...

But if we are talking MWO mechs that I like, that are objectively on the lower end of power scale, the humble DRG-1C, it was the second mech I ever bought in MWO, after an ill-fated Highlander 732.... is it a good mech my Dragon, depending on whom you ask, people I give an AC/10 ***** too, not so much...

Well, they are the pride of House Liao, so why should one expect otherwise? Posted Image

Liao has some good mechs.

Like the Raven and uh... the Pillager?

1. Orion IIc.

If this mech was made correctly I would use it always, but PGI went overboard with the nerfs. A giant crotch doesn't make it nimble, just a fat target and placing the arm missile hardpoint in the mech's shoulder instead of the arm was another below the belt nerf because if you carry missiles the launchers act like a giant damage catcher taking 50-70% extra damage. Judging from how many times I have lost the left arm on the first volley anyway. Definitely an over-nerfed 3-D model so I don't think it can be fixed now.

2. Shadow Cat.

I love this mech and I will find ways to use it, but after the re-scale it needs to be visibly SMALLER than the Nova or Storm Crow! It carries fewer weapons, less armor, and has larger hit boxes and is 5- 10 tons lighter = SMALLER.

3. Summoner.

MWO's Thor is a joke. Hover jets instead of jump jets (that 3PV worked just as we warned PGI and they had to nerf jump jets even though they swore there would be no 3PV related nerfs/problems to the regular game!! LoL!) But hey the Jump jets are fixed equipment as in Battletech, but hey, they don't work like Battletech says they do, so some double-vision there. Fixed ST internals added to 5 tons of useless hover-jets = 8.5 tons of dead-weight and a medium mech's payload. Very low-slung arms, mech's like this should be able to elevate their arms like in Battle Tech. And it's a fat target to boot.

Oh well. I stopped buying Clan mechs. PGI will have to re-evaluate their current 3D model design direction of giant crotches and giant missile launchers with them before I buy any new ones.

The Dragons....

They used to be "ok" back in 8 vs 8.... Then when Clan shows up they are utter crap..

Quirks brought back the Dragon 1N for a while... but it was still a paper thin armor TRoll Mech...

Now all my Dragons (2 Heroes) sit in my garage on stilts(Pillars) rotting away with no engines because none of them are viable with those craptastic hitboxes and sizes

So adoption by conquest is the same as innovation? (I mean it's the american way, but still.....)

I love my black knight!

I know... I know... Its such a terrible mech...

I know... It needs better quirks...

I know... I know... It doesnt have enough laser hard points to meta laser vomit...

But I just love this mech! And if you want to play something that is totally not meta, then you should go out and buy a black knight!

I also love my Black Knight.

I put two ERPPCs on it. It's awful. It's so satisfying to smack someone with them at 800 meters though.

I keep selling them but I keep buying them back, and that mech is the Orion. It's the best known Marik Mech I end up selling it out of frustration but I always end up coming back to it with new ideas to try and get it to work.

Does it still count as innovation if you're simply using blue prints from several hundred years ago?

Also America conquered everyone fair and square with coca cola and Mc Donalds. Just because cocacola addiction is going to kill the entirety of mexico with diabetes doesn't make us the bad guys. Or... something?

I'd normally say my sadcat but I eventually found a way to make it work so they're not hopeless to me, could use a little love but not hopeless.

But I still look at my Trebuchets in my hangar and think "one day, maybe one day..." Still run 'em occasionally though.

A couple of my Cicadas.

Fun to pilot, but can be a struggle to do well in.

A lot of people seem to have missed the "hopeless" part.

The Shadow Cat, Summoner, Mist Lynx and Victor aren't hopeless. They're definitely sub-part, but they're not hopeless in the same sense as the Vindicator or Dragon. I don't even know that you could really call the Trebuchet and Cicada hopeless. Not unless you're running hopeless builds.

I play the SHC, SMN, MLX and VTR regularly and while my results are pretty average, they're definitely not below average. It's not like if I'm piloting my 4xPPC Highlander and I feel like I'm actually sabotaging my team to the point where I should almost be reported. (I just play 4xPPC Highlander because the PPC weapon geometry looks so awesome on the HGN-733P)

Locust.

It will never be top-tier in the current developer environment due to lightness, but I will forever be pushing it to the limit.

I'm defining hopeless as "can't realistically bring this to a comp match." Locust 1E has been called close to comp worthy, but it's not comp-worthy, thus hopeless.

Just as a fact check: I have driven a LCT in comp for both Tier 2 (CK, LCT-3M) and Tier 1 (S RS, LCT-1E) teams. Some leagues have weird restrictions. And seriously, you haven't lived as a light pilot until you've run a LCT in comp. Posted Image
