New player, played the mechwarrior series for years and other online battletech games (e.g. neveron, invasion3042). Always had an official or unnofficial IRC chat room to enjoy and use for help, been a moderator and run new player introduction channels etc.

MWO seems relatively straightforward so far but I have many many questions regarding finer details, in-game jargon / annotations, joining a faction etc.

Searching for MWO chat does not result in an obvious place to go for a community chat room, with numerous references to IRC based channels that no longer seem to exist when visited.

I don't use voice chat or a headset and I am looking for a text based chat room to join. I struggle to believe that this does not exist in some form or another.

Where can I find the most established MWO chat rooms?

Your best bet is probably HPG Outreach on Reddit.

I am not aware of any MWO chat rooms currently still in use.

Edit: Just to add on to Rogue Jedi's response, teamspeak clients allow you to communicate in text with everyone in the channel or in a 1 to 1 private chat with another person. However, this obviously does not work during a match.

Basically how this works is that the person without a mike just listens in during matches and responds with the in-game text chat. Outside of matches, it is usually one person speaks other person texts if chat is in channel chat.

many units have their own teamspeak and there are many teamspeak servers available, the best known is probably the NGNG teamspeak, but to the best of my knowledge there is no purely text based chat available for MWO except for the match chat.
