I'm Confused About Mech Mastery...

I have gotten my Locust chassis to elite status on 3 variants, good to go there.
My confusion is in the master tier. Do I now need to "elite" two other, (completely different), chassis like the Jenner and Spider, (for example), in essence having to elite 9 light mechs to unlock master?

In other words, yes you can master your locust

Make sense?
Because normally you have to unlock 3 variants of the same chassis to get to elite. Do I need to do the same for the Wolfhound, (again using your example), or can I just purchase a single Wolfhound and another single light mech and then get them both to elite in order to unlock the master tier?
Ugh....

to unlock elite you have to complete basic on 3 variants of that chassis, so if you later buy a Jenner and want to elite it you will need to purchase 3 and complete basics on all of them.
to unlock master you have to complete elite on at least 3 variants in the weight class including the Mech you want to Master;
so you could just elite all 3 Locusts and master will be unlocked permanently for any Light mech you purchase in the future,
you could get 3 Spiders, complete basic on all of them then complete elite on 1, then get 3 Arctic Cheetahs and complete basic on all of them, then complete Elite on 1 and you will have master unlocked,
after it is unlocked Master is available for any Mech in the weight class as soon as you complete Elite, but you will have to go through the same procedure on any other weight classes you want to master.
The only Master level skill is an extra module slot, as Locusts start with 2 Mech and 3 weapon module slots, mastering will not give you any real advantage at current (unless you are a veteran player with a stockpile of modules or you have 20+ million cbills and tens of thousands of GXP ready to use) as it would allow 3M + 3W or 2M+4W modules.

To get to elite on ANY mech you have to basic at least 3 variants of that chassis.
Example: I want to elite the locust, I need to basic 3 locusts.
To get to master on any mech you have to elite at least 3 mechs of the same weight.
Example: I want to master the locust, I have elited 1 locust, 1 wolfhound and 2 firestarters. This means the next time I want to master a LIGHT mech, I only have to basic three chassis, I don't have to elite all three of them again.
Hope that explains it a little easier

It's a completely dumb mechanism and quite frankly a terrible blot on what is otherwise a pretty good game.

I could not understand the reasoning behind the whole skill system either until I looked at it solely from the perspective of potential income generation. Then it was like " Oooooooh!"

Yeah, I get that part too. I have no issue with them charging for it since they do need to make money somehow since the client is free.
I just wanted to know how many additional mechs I need to buy, (after getting my "Mastery Pack" for the Locust), in order to master my Pirates Bane. Loves me some ECM on my little speed freak.

If you want to master the Pirate's Bane and have the mastery pack, you DON'T NEED TO BUY anything else, just elite the three locust you get in the pack and then Master the Pirate's Bane.
Once you have the Bane mastered, if you want to master any LIGHT mech in the future you just have to basic three variants of the chassis you want, and then elite and master just the one you're interested in

To unlock Master, you only need to have all the Elite skills for any three variants - of any 'mech(s) - from that weight class.
But, to unlock Elite, you still need to buy all the basics in three variants of the same 'mech.
It's really just that simple; this means that you don't have to Elite three variants of a new chassis to master one if you've already done it with another 'mech (or if you're working on several 'mechs at a time, I suppose.)
If you really need the 'mech bays, you can even buy all the Basics of one variant, sell it, buy all the Basics of another, and repeat till you unlock the Elite skills - but generally you're better served grinding out 'mech bays in Faction Warfare by getting the first few ranks in each faction, or spending the MC you get from events on new bays. Eventually, you'll likely have more bays than 'mechs (I have like 8 extra bays,) so the better long-term investment is saving all your variants.

Ahhhh...*it clicked*, I get it! I have the basics already done on all 3 of my Locust variants. The PB is elited so now I just need to elite the other 2 and that will let me master...got it!

Yep, exactly that. And in the future for any light mech you'll have "master" unlocked, meaning you just need to basic the three variants of the new mech and then elite and master the one you most like (if so desire)
Look at it this way: 3 Basics unlocks Elite for a given chassis and 3 Elites (across the weight class, Light, Medium, Heavy or Assault) unlock master for that given weight class.
Once it "clicks" is easy to understand, but a bit complex to explain

Yeah, and I'm not that bright to begin with so there's that.
