Its not lucrative for them to pay someone else to make something that doesn't make a lot of money to begin with.
Most merchandise like tshirts and pins is a kin to cheap advertising and isnt really a money maker per say. Sure companies make millions selling tshirts but its usually their own designs or some other gimmick like Shirt woot or alike.
There is no money in it, plain and simple. And PGI doesn't own the rights to any of if, they just have PERMISSION to make a game using the assets from the Btech universe. Not to mention they have Mr Iglesias who has done wonders for turning a lot of these old ugly designs into sleek fighting machines there were suppose to be and in turn some of the new Hero mechs have r are being written into canon.
But there is nothing stopping you from taking a few designs or pics of your own and putting them on tshirts, lots of silk screen places will do artwork you send them and as long as you arent selling them there is no legal woes.
