sales are actually good for the bottom line, if they weren't, nobody would have them. you sell something at a loss if it gets them into the store. its easy to see with tangible goods. i went to the store yesterday because a couple things i needed were on sale, and like an idoit i buy a case of coke and a bag of chips because im there already. so while attempting to save 50 cents i ended up spending an entire $20.
now replace tangible goods with farts (thats actually an acronym). mechbays are really just a few bytes of data in the server somewhere. you pretty much pay pgi and an automated system enters that mechbay into your account. you get an expanded gaming experience for a nominal price. no matter what the price is pgi turns a profit. since you need mc to buy a mech bay, no matter what you are making $7+ for the mc purchase, whether you get 4 or 8 bays out of it doesnt really matter. a transaction occured and pgi gets supported.
this is why you cant buy mechbays directly in the store, because by making them jump through the mc hoop means you have to go through the purchase mc screen, where a higher value package is pushed. even if it was on sale you would see this, and may very well swing for one of the bigger packs. so while you were trying to buy a mechbay for less what a cup of coffee goes for these days, you ended up spending 15 bucks. then when you try to figure out what to spend the rest of your mc on after you have the bay you wanted, you see a hero thats slightly more than your mc balance, so what do you do, you buy another mc package. then of course that bay you just bought is now filled and you need another!
when we had events to give them away for free, i kind of think the idea was to draw departed players back into the game, where they can see everyone in their shiny new mech packs and say "i want one of those". you cant shove advertisements in their face if they arent playing after all. i figure they stopped when they started seeing players who haven't given them one thin dime with 50+ mechs (thats about where i was before i started contributing).
