Most people seem to use this:

Gecko, Gorman, Gump

Larry, Lemur, Lemon

Heart, Human, Hitman

Proper phonetic designations dont really matter, people say a word so everyone understands the target mech, not everyone uses correct phonetic alphabet, nor do I.

It should be noted that there is an older WW2 list as well: https://en.m.wikiped...onetic_Alphabet

There are a few variations on the NATO phonetic alphabet, but the important thing to keep in mind is that the word starts with a sound and letter that matches the one in question. "Phone" is a terrible choice, for example, because it starts with an "F" sound and starts with "P". "Indigo" would be an acceptable alternative for "India", as it starts with an "i" sound and is spelled with an "i" (and it is a common enough word). "Golf" and "Gulf" are so close in pronunciation that you could use either one and people will be more certain that you mean "G" than they will be of which one you used. If you can't think of the normal phonetic word it's ok to improvise a little, so long as the information gets across.

One word that really miffed me is Foxtrot. Why not just call it Fox? There are no other words in that alphabet list that can be confused with Fox. Posted Image

And I like to say Beta and Gamma for "B" and "G" cause of playing MW2 Clan campaign for too long.

It should be noted that during Faction Play, the enemy Mech identified as DD can be called out as "Dolly Parton!" as the identifier.

That would be true if "box" was in in the list, but it is not. And due to the way the first consonant is pronounced, people will more likely confuse it with "*****" more than box.

At the Atlanta international airport they use "dixie" instead of "delta"

Its not so much letter desg that needs to be called its the mech. "Target is alpha, a kingcrab"

ttk is so low u dont have time to cycle targets to find "echo". Really the mech name needs to be used "target is that pos clammer in his barn of a daishi. Efffff him up"

Edit: mech call

It's best to stick with the NATO phonetics (the most commonly used in this game), rather than make a word up, since many players have these etched into memory and can react with instant recognition....instead of taking the fraction of a second required to parse the non-standard designation.

It's fine in a pinch, but players that have any interest in working well as a team should memorize the proper designations.

That's common at commercial airports, as Delta is the name of an airline.

Really? I'd heard it was more widespread than that. I guess my source was in error.

I'm one of the few fellows that seems to repeat orders/targets/positions using multiple phonetic codes. I have 11 years of civilian law enforcement background and we use the common phonetic codes: Adam, Boy, Charles, David, Edward, Frank, George, Henry, Ida, John, King, etc.

Though, when I call out a target or position I will usually call it out three times with info that is CCC (clear, concise, cogent): "Enemy Marauder targeted out in the open in H9, Henry 9 (and/or) Hotel 9." or, "Long viz on enemy Dire Wolf in A4, Adam 4 (or alpha 4), moving to our right". In writing this, I will always usually start with the civilian codes, but if I hear or see others use the military codes I'll probably use that first or prior to using the civilian. Either way, communication is good. :)

During a quick drop, some ****** actually tried to correct me once in saying over vox "Adam should be alpha, noob". After a few team mates put him in his place we heard nothing from him the rest of the drop. :)

The reason the system is used isn't due to spelling. It's due to sound. It's pretty common in Amateur Radio still due to those very reasons.
