Armed Forces of the Federated Commonwealth

SUBJECT: Draconis March Special Assignment Units

TO: Field Marshal James Sandoval, CO, Draconis March

FROM: Dennis Maxwell, Special Liaison Ministry of Intelligence, Investigation, and Observation (MIIO)

Your Highness,
Per your request, attached is a list of Draconis March specialized militia force commands and their MIIO. These forces are disconnected from the traditional chain of command of the Armed Forces of the Federated Commonwealth. Due to their special capabilities and equipment, they are maintained at the same level as Regular Army forces through a joint slush fund of the Armed Forces of the Federated Commonwealth and the Ministry of Intelligence Investigation and Organization.

Many such units already incorporated in larger Regular Army or Draconis March Militia Regiments; however, per your request I have attached those commands that are currently unassigned.

Per your orders, I have included the MIIO read out on each command, its readiness and loyalty.

Regnum Defende
Dennis Maxwell
MIIO

Fairfield Special Operations Group
1 Combined-Arms Battalion / Veteran / Loyal
CO: Lieutenant Colonel Jacob Santiago
XO: Major Maria Escobar
Unit Description:
The Fairfield Special Operations Group came into being in the aftermath of the Third Succession War. In 3010, Major General John Braithwaite of the 17th Avalon Hussars RCT understood the need for a combat force that could train planetary militia’s to the resist Draconis Combine raids and attacks, while also being able to perform similar attacks on DCMS frontier bases. However, the 17th had neither the resources nor the men to spare to form such a group.

Utilizing his political connections to the ruling family of Fairfield, Braithwaite formed the Fairfield Special Operations Company as formed as a partner command of the 17th Avalon Hussars RCT. The company was supplied BattleMechs by the Fairfield Planetary Militia. Select soldiers and officers with prior military experience in Regular Army who were set to retire were made an offer: retire or join the Fairfield SOC for three years and receive an extra five years on the end of your service pension.

The offer worked too well, and soon, over a battalion of veterans had been recruited in and armed to form the Fairfield Special Operation Group. Even after the offer ended, the unit became a premier posting for veterans soldier seeking to end their days in a distinguished command. Since their inception, the Fairfield SOG has primarily supported the 17th Avalon hussars, providing rear guard supporting, serving as a special tactical unit, and taking control of frontier security when the 17th was otherwise occupied. Due to their veteran status and use as a rapid response force, the SOG is expert in multiple strategies and tactics, and is particularly skilled at performing quick and forceful combat drops on un-expecting enemy forces.

Officers:
Jacob Santiago is a time tested veteran of the 17th Avalon Hussars RCT. After 20 years in the service, and action as a Captain in the War of 3039, he returned to Fairfield to what he had hoped would be a retirement. However, after a career in the military, he found civilian life unsatisfying, and requested re-activation as a senior officer in the Fairfield SOG. This was granted, and after three years as the executive officer, he was promoted to command. Since then, he has initiated an intense training schedule and raised the SOG to prominence as a rapid response force on the frontier.

Markab Raiders
2 Companies / Regular / Loyal
CO: Major Jana Treadwell
XO: Captain Assana Dantius

Unit Description:
The Raiders are the best two companies of Mechwarriors from the Markab Planetary Militia. They are largely made up of veteran Mechwarriors who have returned home from Regular Army units. The Raiders have primarily served as a ready reserve for Regular Army units—an emergency supply of fresh troops to fill the holes of larger combat organizations. After the unit’s needs had been replenished, the Raiders were returned to their home planet.

However, in the aftermath of the War of 3039, the Markab Raiders were assigned the task of jumping into Draconis space and collecting intelligence. The Raiders would jump into systems, gather broadcast data, and raid supply depots in order to keep the DCMS off balance. After two years of service, the Raiders returned home. Since then, they have maintained their transport abilities and launched several raids to gather intelligence and assess the Dragon’s readiness to strike.

Officers:
Major Treadwell was once on the fast track to command. After graduating at the top of her class from the Robinson Battle Academy, she was assigned a lance command in the Robinson Ranger, followed by a company command in the 12th Deneb Light Cavalry. However, in the War of 3039, her career faltered. Assigned to the Dieron thrust, her company was tasked with supporting elements of the 12th Lyran Guard. The Guard’s commander made a fatal mistake with his troops, allowing Dieron Regular forces to outflank the Guard’s first battalion and causing a major setback in the campaign. The Guard’s commander blamed the error on the inability of 12th Deneb Light Cavalry to save his career. Due to his political connections, Major Treadwell’s assertions to the contrary were noted, filed, and forgotten, and she was ordered to command the Markab Raiders in their harassing campaign.

Elbars’s Night Watch
1 Combined-Arms Regiment / Experienced /Questionable
CO: Colonel Kelvin Mormont
XO: Major Jonathan Snow

Unit Description:
The Night Watch is on old, proud, and outdated force that has lived through the expansion of humanity to the stars, the rise of the Successor States, the fall of the Star League, and four succession wars. Since their inception, the men of Elbar’s Night Watch have served the royal family of Elbar, the Mormonts. A Mormont has command the Night Watch for three centuries, and have faithfully protected Elbar despite the Succession Wars. The Night Watch never swore fealty to either Davion or Kurita, and despite Elbar changing hands three times, they remained above the fray, protecting the people of Elbar and family Mormont.

However, in the midst of the Third Succession War, the Kurita rule of Elbar became exceptionally harsh. Through a secret message hand delivered to Andrew Davion, the Mormont family offered the Armed Forces of the Federated Suns the services of the Night Watch, as well as a secret cache of two lances of Star League era BattleMech’s for liberation. In reply, Andrew Davion himself led the Davion Heavy Guards, Robinson Rangers, and two regiments of the Avalon Hussars onto Elbar.

Since then, the Night Watch has largely served as an added planetary militia in the Draconis March. However, their unique training as a totally combined arms regiment—4 companies of battlemechs supported by two battalion of armor and mobile infantry—enable them to serve as a unique strike force to special task missions. In addition, their experience as defenders makes them among the most innovative defensive units in the Federated Suns.

Officers:
Kelvin Mormont is a brilliant tactician in defensive action. The first Mormont to graduate from both the Night Watch’s Training and a AFFS military institute (Robinson Battle Academy), he is well versed in the art of war. After graduating the RBA, he briefly served as a lance commander in the Fifth Deneb Light Cavalry where he fought in the Fourth Succession War on Northwind, gaining valuable combat experience. The commander of Elbar’s Night Watch and heir to the Duchy of Elbar, he leads the Night Watch from the Blackstone Keep, an ancient Star League fortress equipped with the latest NAIS technology. The Night Watch rarely leaves Elbar, but when they do, it assured they are a force to be reckoned with.

Blues and Royal
1 Squadron of Aerospace Fighters / 2 BattleMech Companies / Elite / Fanatical
CO: Major Lori Paul-Davion
XO: Captain Isaac Fenwick

Unit Description:
The Blues and Royals were formed by a cadet line of the Davion family at the end of the Second Succession War. The Paul-Davion’s, unsure of the loyalty of the Sandoval line, formed the command as a fanatically loyal rapid reaction force meant to keep the Sandoval’s in line. Supported by the great wealth due to prudent investments in Federated Boeing at Galax, they armed the unit with the latest in Aerofighters and BattleMech technology and arms.

Since then, the Sandovals have proved their loyalty, and the Blues and Royals have become a veteran force in the coreward regions of the Draconis March. They are primarily used to garrison planets of strategic navigational importance but little military significance—jump points that could enable Draconis Combine forces to endanger Addicks, Towne, Robinson, or New Avalon.

Recently, the Blues and Royals have taken up posting on Kentares IV as a ready response force with a jumpship and transport to their name.

Officers:
Major Paul-Davion is the second daughter of Lord Matthew Paul-Davion. She followed the in footsteps of her father and joined the AFFC in 3031, attending Albion Military Academty and graduating in the middle of her class as an aerospace pilot. Despite her royal title and name, she has largely avoided front line service, and instead has proven a diligent logistician and an organizational genius. As such, she rarely sees the field in her BattleMech, leaving combat command to her XO, Isaac Fenwick.

Fenwick is an officer looking to end his career in the service of the Davion family. Originally an enlisted soldier in the infantry of the 2nd Crucis Lancer RCT, after seeing battle in the Fourth Succession War, he was given the opportunity to become an officer by attending Goshen War College, where his aptitude in a BattleMech was first discovered. Since then, he has served in half a dozen units in all three marches of the former Federated Suns as well as the province of Skye in the former Lyran Commonwealth. A loyalist to the Davion family, he has proven an able combat commander, though he lacks the finesse and organization abilities of a standard line officer.

Cartago Duelists
2 Lances / Elite / Regular
CO: Master Duelist Enrico Barraso
XO: Senior Duelist Bodi Miller

Unit Description:
The Cartago Duellists are a unique element within the Draconis March. Though formally officers of the AFFC, they wear different uniforms and serve a different rank structure. All men in the unit hold the title of duelist, with only three officers holding two other titles: two lance commanders hold the title of Senior Duelist, with the commander holding the rank of Master Duelist.

The Duelists serve the Federated Suns by training a select cadre of soldier in elite combat. All men who enter the Duelists leave with frontline combat postings wheever they choose. Provided, they survive. The Duelists see consistent action against the Draconis Combine. In addition, they rarely train in simulators, preferring live fire training exercises. They have trained alongside the best officers in the AFFC, as well as the Wolf’s Dragoons and Eridani Light Horse.

Officers:
Master Dueliest Barraso has seen combat in every major action since the Third Succession War. Formally holding the rank of Leftenant General, the aged warrior is a brilliant Mechwarrior. His greatest action was in 3023 against thw Warrior House Ijori. Then a Major in the Fifth Davion Guard, his command was ordered to retreat from a strategically critical pass. However, to do so would expose them to Capellan artillery. As his men fell back, he charged forward, breaking through the Capellan line and forcing the Capellan artillery to fallback. When the battle was over, he had defeated two lances of House Ijori’s greatest men and denied the enemy the pass. He has often been asked to fight on Solaris. However, he has always refused, and furthermore, makes all soldiers in the Duelist swear to never fight for sport.

Lucerne Reserve Lancer’s
CO: Colonel Relena Traverse
XO: Lieutenant Colonel John Parker Montgomery
1 BattleMech Regiment / Green / Loyal

Unit Description:
The planet Lucerne is often called the door step to Robinson. Less than a full jump to the capital of the Draconis March, Lucerne serves as a strategic jumping off point and supply base for the entire Draconis March. After both planets were retaken in the Third Succession War, the Sandoval family began to aggressively invest in the defense of the Robinson Operations Area. In addition to rebuilding the Robinson Rangers, they built the Lucerne Reserve Lancer’s as a rear guard force to augment regular Army and March Militia’s. The regiment is staffed with largely green recruits and fresh graduates of the Robinson Battle Academy, and was only recently added to the Armed Forces of the Federated Commonwealth Table of Organization and Equipment.

Officers:
Relena Traverse is the politically connected cousin of Duke John Mathis. She has risen to her current role largely through her use of his name and goodwill. She lacks skill on the field of battle, and is bored with the organization responsibilities of command. Her XO, Montgomery, has had to take responsibility for the unit, but has been unable to make up for his commanders inequities. Moral and readiness have suffered for it.
