For those of you who name your mechs, do you follow a rule or have guidelines for the names? What are some of the names that you have?

I usually name notable variants once they are elited, and will either give them a name based on their abilities or follow a naming convention per chassis. I've also named a few based on old pets that the mech would remind me of. Some are just dumb like "Wangamatang" for the YLW. Here are some examples

CDA-3M "Nikita" Small, silent, and sneaky like a pet I had.
CN9-AH "Brynhildr" All of my Cents have Valkyrie names
GRF-1E "HappyScrappy" He is a hero pup.

I usually stick to a theme across a chassis family. For instance, all my Blackjacks have gambling names (Full House, Split, Bust, etc) and all my Hunchbacks are names after Hobbits.

My Thunderbolts are named after ThunderCats characters and I try to match the paint up to the character. And my Dragons are named after Dragons.

DRG-1C Vermithrax
DRG-5N Haku
TDR-9S Panthera
TDR-9SE Pumyra

I name mine from the weapons they carry,it is a bit boring but it lets me change around my drop deck faster.

Use call signs from other games/NATO phonetic alphabet. then give a number relating to its lance/company - eg Bravo Lead, Bravo 1-2, Hitman Actual...

Anything ECM gets something ghost-related like phantom or spooky or... ghost
Anything tanky gets something armour related like knight, paladin, crusader etc.
Anything long range gets something weapon related like stiletto or claymore.

Except my first mech I ever purchased - the Awesome 8Q. Which shall always remain "Lazorboat". and will never be used again.

Boring things really.

Most of mine are bad puns or movie reference.

Like the dragon 1N named Puff

Or the TDK named Megaman.

The only mechs I name usually have something special about them.

NVA-PRIME (G)- Honor
RVN-3L- Dbag (it runs the super old meta build that made everybody hate the raven way back when)

Nothing clever or personal in my naming convention. They all follow the same pattern engine designation (XL, STD) then some letter salad designating predominant weapons load 2LP4ML, then single letter designations for special features like B-beagle, J for jump jet equipped. So a Jester might be: XL-2LP4ML-J. If there is too much info to impart with that designation scheme, only then will I use a generic name like: "msl boat". Sure its lame and boring, but I have too much trouble making a drop deck as it is, to waste additional time thinking "So Tom is that mech, and Jerry is that other one. Now what is the load out in Fred and Ethel? Hmm, what is the difference again...oh crap I only have 20 seconds left to save!"

Only mech I have given a "proper name" to is my first IV4 with 2 LBX. Its called "The Hobo".

TBR Prime(i) = Melly Jean III
Hunchback HBK-4G = Tank Abbot

About the only mech in my stable that has a name is my WHM-6R(S), I call it Lemon, this is due to the name of one of my Warhammers in TT, Lemon had some glitches and a bright yellow paint job... But Lemon started life as a WHM-6Rb, that was later converted to be some what like my current WHM-6R(S) build, but not the same paint on them...

Single tube LRM? That was the biggest dbag Raven of them all.

No plan I stopped bothering after about the 7th mech, but if I did start using it again, I wouldn't have a plan other than to try make it sound random.

Only reason I can think of off hand are names to help you remember the build, or for role play fluff.

If its for RP fluff then I don't own over 100 mechs so I would try make it look like each different pilot chose the name

I try and think of a name as soon as i buy them (i change some later based on weapons though) but here are some of my favorites

kitfoxes:
D: Fluffykins
S: Creampuff
Prime: Cuddlebunny

i bought them awhile ago and haven't changed them since :D

other ones a like:

RFL 5D: TasteMehLsr

RFL 3C: I has a Rifl

KGC 000 Crap Flinga (it runs 2 lb10, 2srm6, 4mg and 2spl)

MLR MX90 CrapMauler (same as KGC but w/out spl)

and i named 2 of my stalkers after 2 snoopy stuffed animals i had when i was very young (i named them Freeze and Jojo, Freeze was blue and Jojo was green. Colored my stalkers the same too :P)

I name mine after norse gods, different beings like ghosts and wraits and some odd creative names. I vary greatly but have barely named half of my total number of mechs.

My Hunchback 4G is named Boomstick

A bit unoriginal I know, and there are many hunchbacks like him; BUT THIS ONE IS MINE!

Don't typically name mine, but a friend of mine has a King Crab named "Baron Von Scuttlebutt" and you will never, ever top that name for a mech.
