So what are they used for besides now getting new members?

They can be used by Loyalist/House units to hire Mercs, and upgrade a planets defenses.

That's about all we know right now until we get to actually play with the system.

they really need to reset unit coffers to 0

big units abused CW for months earning billions... they need to take that money away

especially since any new units that are formed are at a huge disadvantage since they have to buy tickets for new members unlike the older units that dont have to pay anything despite having earned billions of cbills from abusing the system

how would taking away the money that was earned from months of abusing the system kill the game?

itd be one thing if those cbills were earned legit, but they werent. they were earned from months and months of beating up on pugs while switching factions every other week to maximize the loyalty rewards. they were earned through exploiting and abusing the system.

thats why all unit coffers should be reset to 0. to force everyone to start earning fairly.

Because some units got most of the money in their coffers from pilot donations. Resetting unit coffers would be stealing from the players who donated.

Wow, you are sure hung up on the mean big units being not nice. :)
I belong to a large unit, (SRoT) that has a couple hundred active members, but doesn't actually play tonnes of CW, and certainly I don't think we have devoted 'Billions of C-bills to unit coffers. Our members joined to access a Teamspeak server and have a social 'area' to play in. We invite a lot of new players to join us and to learn the ropes, and try to be good MWO 'citizens'. It seems crazy to force us to go back and pay to re-invite all our members, including the very casual, and forcing us into a situation of having to 'tax' our members, so a small handful of us can play CW. Many of our casual players don't do CW. But, we like to have a unit tag, and hang out together. Not every big unit is a c-bill whoring / seal clubbing frat house designed for the sole purpose of making you feel sad. :)
Cheers.

i have nothing against big units specifically. I dont think any unit should get preferential treatment from PGI.

all units should be treated equally. which is why all units should have their coffers reduced to 0. not just big units.

reset everyone to a blank slate and start CW over from scratch without the potential to exploit/abuse the system.

Dude, I donated a few million c-bill to my unit when the option first appeared months / years ago. If I read the update correctly, that donation should cover the cost of inviting someone new to our unit. Why should I, and my unit lose that money, which, until today, never actually had a function? (I admit I donated prematurely)
Most, if not all the unit coffer money came from the players. Oh, and BTW, how do you define abusing the system? I hated doing CW because unless there was an event going, the populations were dead, it took forever to find a match, and I could earn way more c-bills doing 'Quick-play'. What was the abuse that upsets you so much? ROFLstomping PUG groups? Just curious.
