From first hand experience, one tactic your lances and companies will need to learn is for some of your light and medium mechs to scout and some to screen your heavy and assault mechs from the opposing light and medium mechs. An Atlas seems like the king of the battlefield but I can tell you a Jenner or Commando will cut you down if you don't have help.

lol don't assume the entire planet is capable of your same level of intelligence. One thing WoT has shown me, you will quickly learn that humans are not reliable and you are best left on your own cause everyone else will be playing solo. If not, you got lucky and found some random group of individuals that can coordinate in a PUG but thats a rare occurence.

Wow, you could peel yourself away from beta long enough to taunt us with this? Really exciting post if it's true.

I hope you will reconsider youre statement after playing this game. WoT-comparisons are such a bad habit. It about the community, and in this game most of the people are old enough to play together.

Yeah i know this sounds harsh to the younger ones, but its a truth that younger players dont really know what teamplay is.

In a TT game, my Phoenix Hawk trashed an Atlas one on one. So I can see that happening in the game. I danced circles around him, made good use of cover, Jumped around a bit and he couldn't hit me. If you're in an assault mech and encounter one of your smaller brothers, treat them like a passed pawn. Exterminate them as quickly as possible.

to my perception of things, for those mechs that are worried about terminally losing a fast moving light mech to their rear arc, my advice would be to simply stay with one other mech. while one fast moving light mech may get behind you, it can't get behind both of you, which means it's gonna take a beating from your lancemate (or vice versa if the light mech goes for your lancemate).

A very valuable point. When in war, never go alone. Not just because of the lighter mechs, everyone can ruin youre day when he catches you on the wrong foot.
Sometimes, everyone needs help, thats why we are more than one. :D

What's worse than a light mech on your 6? 2 light mechs on your 6...

By the same token, light mechs aren't likely to be running solo either, unless they have no choice.

I propose opening each game with the following quote:

Quote

You can help me. Whatever comes out of these gates, we've got a better chance of survival if we work together. Do you understand? If we stay together we survive.

Agreed w/Veers but in a PUG everyone has their own opinion of how to fight (unless there is some kind of controling characteristic FORCING teamwork ala tank/healer/dps of mmporgs)

Even so...the image of someone shouting 'ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED???!' in this computer game made me chuckle

PUG's are a crap shoot in every MMO. I'm sure we'll be no different here. At least nobody has shouted "Leroy Jenkins" yet.

I would have thought that the advice in this post would go without saying as since it is real-time and not turn-based. The tablet-top advantages in weight class are much diminished in real-time games.

No mech should travel alone unless they are bait especially heavies and assaults as their flanks can get exloited too easily.

i have a group of about 11 friends and we all plan on playing together we've been in many team based games like line battles in mount and blade Napoleonic wars, Arma 2, mount and Gladius, IL2, iron front, so i think i got this covered

I think the buddy system will be popular with groups. However I think the lights will still have a reasonably good chance slowing you down or maneuvering around you if you are sticking so closely together. If the maps are built large enough there should always be enough room for lights to use the fog of war to slip through the lines. On the other hand if the maps are so small you can make a contiguous battle line while advancing those lights will have a much harder time against a competent team.

In the end I think 40-75 ton mechs will be the most popular. Assaults will be too slow for some situations (ie having to get somewhere in a hurry to cap or stop a cap) and the lights will be pigeonholed into scout or skirmishing (they can nip around a battle line but they can't really be a part of a solid battle line).

Yeah... I get a light mech that wants to mess with me, I'm taking there leg... They wont be moving all that fast then....

But yeah agreed safety in numbers.... and with fast moving mechs you can disorient a target if there not able to track movement appropiately.
Pilots that get too focused, and develope tunnel vision tend to get owned.
