If I'm running around in my Locust behind enemy lines and I have LOS to an enemy mech then anyone of my teammates that has LRM's can target that mech provided that they are in LRM range to said enemy mech, right?

As long as "I" can see it then they can target it, correct?

Next question...if I am doing my spotting thing what mechs should I be targetting for my guys? Big assault mechs? Enemy LRM boats?

you need to target it with the magic R button

go for something out of cover/position and preferably slow

As long as you TARGET it, they can target it.

That's why everyone tells you to press R, because line of sight target info (hollow triangle) isn't shared with your team. You need to actually target stuff.

Once you TARGET stuff, other people will see those doritos as solid triangles, which means someone is targeting them.

Yeah, I go target with R and then I sit and wait for the incoming missile icon to appear over the target. Sometimes it comes, sometimes it doesn't. There have been times where I've sat next to a boulder or building watching the entire enemy team and gone from target to target with little or no incoming missiles. I was thinking I was doing something wrong. Posted Image

Works great if someone requests a spotter and where to go, then run around it in a light (shooting) and wait for those LRMs to arrive Posted Image

Maybe nobody had lrms, or already had their own targets. I know when I'm lrming, I always prefer my own targets unless I have a known solid spotter, because I don't know how long you can hold a lock for, whether my missiles will even hit the target etc

As spotter:
  • Find target.
  • Look at target.
  • Hit R.
  • If target has a square around it, you are spotting.
  • A good spotter holds the target as long as possible so that missiles have time to hit!
As LRM user:
  • Find dorrito (floating triangle shaped like V).
    • If hollow, someone sees and is NOT pushing R. Not a good target.
    • If solid, someone sees and has pushed R. Good target?
  • Press R to target threat (dorrito) closest to your crosshair.
  • Wait several seconds to ensure target is being held.
  • Hover over red-square target with crosshair. Listen for sound and visual lock.
  • Fire. "Our missiles will blot out the sun!"
  • HOLD TARGET FOR ENTIRE FLIGHT!!!!!

Also, call out and let me know you have a good lock on a target from a safe position. Then I know the lock is most likely not going away anytime soon.

Just get into the habit of hitting R. It will help your brawling, LRMing, supporting, etc...

As a Spotter, I've found that typing "*Letter Designation* Locked" usually gets missiles on the way. VOIP usually works too, when I'm I'm using my mic.

Sometimes, when I'm safely looking at something, I'll even type what it is so my team knows what is out there. For example, "C DWF D4, Locked".

Everything above is correct--a TAG is a good thing for a spotting mech--narcs are too. Also if you are spotting and the LRMs are not hitting tell the team they aren't so they can save the ammo. I will normal call target (A) (mech name) in the clear --TAG on. I try to find the other teams assaults or LRM boats to take them out as early as possible. Also remember to change positions the other team will figure out you are there and come looking for you.

Good luck, and have fun

I can't believe I found an error in a post from Koniving, but here goes. If the dorrito is a hollow triangle it means you can see the enemy but no one has him locked. Once you press R on a hollow dorrito, it will change to a solid dorrito and all of your friendlies who don't have line of sight to that target will now be able to target him as well.

I said it because I've had hollow dorritos on targets I can't see due to standing behind an obstacle such as a building (truth be told I've never been able to lock onto them) but it is incredibly rare. This could be a bug as I'm aware it's not intended behavior. :P

Jes' messin' with ya. Rejoice! You found an error!

Edit: knew I said it for a reason.

UAV and satellite spots give hollow durritos that don't last long enough to be worthwhile locks (Sat doesn't last long and is a probe in BT but that's just me being picky) and UAV is easily shot down.

SO MUCH THIS!

If you're using voice comms (in-game VOIP or TS or w/e), be sure to ANNOUNCE to your teammates that our target is or is NOT a good LRM target, and by call letter (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, etc.). If it's got overhead or steep cover that will block LRMs from your teammates' position(s), then make sure they HOLD FIRE or find a different target. If it's IN THE OPEN, let 'em know to bring the rain.

NARC and TAG are both great for spotters, too. NARC especially lets you mark your target, call it out to your friendlies, and be in another ZIP code when the missiles make splash. A lot of LRM users will look specifically for those NARC and TAG icons on enemy mechs. UAV is also a great one for a spotter, particularly a sneaky one that can move up within range of the enemy FROM BEHIND and pop the UAV there, then back out and find another position or angle while the bad guys run for cover--this can sometimes force some of those reds to break out into bad positions, isolating themselves from help so you can go to town on them and feast upon their souls! (Sorry. BIG Evil Dead fan here.)

But yeah. A spotter presses R. A GOOD spotter can supplement it with TAG/NARC/UAV. A BRO Spotter, tho, will live-update his LRM boats on how good a target they have. Be a bro, bro.

Also, if his arrow is pointing at you on your minimap, RUN for cover or to your teammates !!!
