I think all this Freelancer / Mercenary / Individual queue / Group queue nonsense becomes completely irrelevant if PGI can just get more people wanting to play FP. Period. Let's give PGI some ideas on how to attract people to FW, rather then let them continue to tinker with stuff that will only accomplish the opposite!

More players = bigger, more diverse talent pool + better group size matching = better matchmaking = more fun had for all!
I think that PGI is trying to treat a symptom here and not the root problem. The problem is that very few people simply want to play FP. No one wants to play FP because matchmaking sucks. Or the wait time for a match is too long, Or because earning potential is lower than compared to 3 decent QP matches. Or imbalanced attack/defend modes. Or sheer boredom from repetition. Or whatever.
Some ideas:
- Drop this recruiting invitation cost nonsense. Encourage new players to join units so that they can experience FW with others and get brought into the fold, rather than deterring them with ridiculous recruitment costs. Get them some training. I'd be curious to know what percentage of noobs stick around after getting pasted repeatedly in their first 25 matches?
- Make FW more fun and more interesting. Then more people will play.
- Make maps dynamic, so that it's not exactly the same every time. Move the gates/gens/turrets/etc. around planet to planet. Heck, tie this in with the 4v4 mode -- make the mini-map and battle-map inaccurate or something if your team loses on intel. Or have areas with fog of war. Make intelligence mean something. (Instead of getting insta-nuked by the Long-Tom)
- Drop the number of contested planets at a time to 2 or 3. Force more people into each planet queue so that the matchmaker has a better pool to match players up for that planet, instead of splattering players across multiple planets.
- Improve FP rewards. If you're gonna get stuck waiting 15 minutes for a drop and then get rolled, it should at least reward you as much as getting rolled twice in QP. And if you win in FP, you should get more than winning 2 or 3 matches in QP.
