Hello.

Im about to buy my first Assault tier mech for a Ballistic platform. And I cant decide between King Crab 000 and Mauler MX90.

I wish to try different setups including missiles/ballistics or just pure ballistic.

What would be the better choice?

Thank you.

Mauler is better IMO due to hitbox. But the Mauler becomes pretty big with 4 missiles mounted.

But if you're looking for some dakka action, nothing beats the Direwolf

Hey keep in mind that you will be prime target dealing with those fatties. Wanting some IS-Dakka action? Take a look at the Cataphracts or JägerMechs. I like the Ilya Murromets very much...

The Mauler lets you use quad LBX10s. Checkmate.

I believe the Mauler to be the better mech. That said you may wish get into ballistics on a lighter and cheaper platform such as the Jagermech. Assaults can be very unforgiving for the new player.

Every time I ask my unit mates what assault mech to get they recommend the mauler. Its got solid dakka and it's not a whale. The king crab has more armor and can do the PPC thing better. The king crab is also better at doing Gauss Rifle builds. It all depends on what you wanna do though. If you only want dakka, the Mauler will work out better for you as it's one of the best dakka mechs in the game and at 90 tons it's very friendly to group/invasion dropdecks. The king crab has slightly more options, but is not quite as good at those options as a more specialized assault would be.

Forget the missiles.
First get the mauler (great dakka imho), later get the king crab (great mechs too, but not for the beginner imho)

Greetings

Mauler MX90...5 AC5 high mounted. There's a reason why the Mauler is getting taken in competitive drops as of late.

Sounds unanimous so far. MAULER. It's THE IS dakka assault mech.

Now, as pointed out above, it's also gonna run you a good chunk of CBills (or MC or $$$) to get those, and you MIGHT be just as well off starting in a lighter/cheaper mech that can dakka well. Jagermech is a great one for IS. Clan side, it's the Dire Wolf for assaults and probably the Ebon Jaguar for heavies.

Or go two-sided and get you some Hunchbacks! IS ones for the -4G and -4H, Clammers for the -IIC and -IIC-C. Third variants? -4SP and -IIC-A. Golden.

This'll be even better now that the shotgun spread's been reduced.

Anyway get both. Crabs are great fun as are maulers. Just remember the mauler is humanoid and needs a humanoid armor layout (12 to 20+ rear unless a DPS build) while the crab can get away with high front armor (as little as 12 rear and more overall armor available).

Yay!

Anyway enjoy your beasts.

Side note if this is your first mech I recommend you go for a 75 ton Orion or Marauder or warhammer first. These play like assaults but can muster speed when needed.

Thank you All for the input, its nice to see a helpful community!

I should of mentioned that this is not my first mech purchase. It is however my first "Assault" mech, im a returning player from beta and launch week. Only recently picked MWO up again when i saw an ad for the April patch, logged on an bought the MAD-5D straight away.

Ive had the Jagermech before, that a lot have recommended, in beta and it was pretty cheesy peeking over hills.

I'm now off to "Maul" somebody!

Thank you again.
