Hi all, I was wondering... if I equip an XL engine and store a lot of ammo in my torsos, will CASE protect the torso from ammo explosions? Or maybe a better question to ask, can ammo be detonated without necessarily destroying the torso (and thus the mech), making CASE a good investment?

No unfortunately. CASE prevents the damage from spreading from the location it is installed in. You can protect standard engines on IS mechs with CASE.

Ammo can in theory not destroy the torso they are stored in. Explosion damage depends on the amount and type of ammo.

See Smurfy's for information on damage: http://mwo.smurfy-ne...ment#ammo_types

Edit: The above applies to IS mechs. Clans have CASE as default, and can lose 1 torso from their XL's without mech destruction.

Just as Kekkone said there is no use for CASE on an IS mech with XL engine.

In my opinion even on mechs with standard engine the use is somewhat limited. MWO allows you to put ammunition in your head and legs. In Quickplay neither of those components get shot all too often so you dont risk too much by putting your ammunition there. Also the chance for ammunition explosion is only 10% IF the ammo gets destroyed directly.

Would be much cooler if they removed the ability to put ammunition in legs and maybe gave CASE a damage reduction for explosions or smth...

^^^ Kekkone pretty much nailed it. There is NO good reason to take CASE in an IS mech with an XL engine. IS CASE can only be mounted in the side torso, it only protects the CENTER torso FROM the side, and losing the SIDE in an IS XL mech means destruction.

This question came up not long ago, and some old TT campaigners provided good reason why it is the way it is. Salvage, and R&R, apparently. While it doesn't keep the mech in the game, it makes it less expensive and difficult overall to repair the mech, or alternately, makes it more valuable for salvage, that the CT isn't blown completely out and that the engine is at least partially intact. We don't have those considerations in MWO.

The ONLY thing I can think of using CASE for with an IS XL is if you have a single critical slot on that side and flat-out NEED a half-ton crit pad. Otherwise, no. Keep a few on hand for the occasional weird STD engine build, sell the rest.

No if done right CASE is not critable - without RnR drop CASE

BTW: clans have in every zone CASE (so placement of ammunition in the arms isn't the worst thing)

Funfact about CASE (cellular ammunition storage equipment):
When you use CASE in a Mech with XL you save salvage value for the enemy !!!
