I recently realized that team players might be talking to each other (instead of chatting) and I am not hearing them. I am a bit confused about the option though.

I played with a unit once, and we installed TeamSpeak and somehow it worked. But I think I had to join a chatroom or something to make it work. That wouldn't work for Quick Match or Faction Warfare because how is it going to know what room to use.... right? Or am I missing something.

I also noticed that I had VOIP turned off. Now I have it turned on. Will I hear voices now (in a good way Posted Image )?

Are these two completely separate options?

Yes, teamspeak and VOIP are two separate things. You need to have the Enable VOIP checkbox checked in order to both speak to your teammates and hear them, with it unchecked you can do neither.

To the OP, in case you don't know, in order to talk in game using comms, you will need to press the Caps Lock key. You can do this and then say comms check or something and you should get a response.

Note that in pug drop comms are really, really hit or miss. Some drops there will be 7 or 8 people talking (which is AWESOME!!) and other times it will just be you.

Good luck and hope to see you on the battlefield.

MWOs built in VOIP allows you to talk to your team in a match.

Teamspeak allows you to talk to players on the same teamspeak as you at any time, but you need to find a server and team up with the people in the same room as you for this to be useful

When I do group drops, I usually have Discord/Steam chat/Team Speak with my group, but we still use in game VOIP to relay information to the rest of the group as well. Half the time we are BSing about things in general that may or may not be related to the match at any given moment, so the other 6-8 people in the match with us don't need to hear all of that and would just be a distraction for them if they did. Our unit isn't big enough to field a 12 man even when everyone is on, so we've never had a match that was 100% us before. Of course, the new scouting mode would let us field entire teams in a match without too much issue now, at least on the weekends when more of us have the time to be in the game reliably.

Which chat solution we use depends mainly on who I am dropping with. Pretty much my entire unit uses Steam a low, so we use it's chat a lot. Steam won't let accounts that haven't met a minimum purchase (only like $5) threshold use chat though. That's only an issue when my son plays with us since the only things on his Steam account are F2Ps, any purchases are on my account, so we use Discord if he is dropping with us. I prefer Discord over TS since even setting up a server is free, but there is 1 group I have dropped with once or twice that uses TS on a regular basis and already have a server setup, so I use TS if dropping with them.

/waves to Lady D :)

What the others said by way of explanation.

A set up tip next...

I do similar to Lady D (and most of us really) in that our group uses an external service to BS with each other during a match, coordinate, etc. But keep the ingame voip on to exchange and call when needed with the rest of the team.

Try this
1. Keep your ingame voip on Push to Talk.
2. Put your TS/Discord/Mumble/external voip to its Always On or Voice Activated setting.
3. Set your TS/Discord/Mumble/externl voip to also have the Push to MUTE on the SAME keybind as your ingame's Push to TALK

Effect? Now you can chat away freely all the time with your friends without annoying the rest of the drop team, and when you push to talk to ingame folk, it mutes your external so your friends don't get echo and feedback, etc.

Works a treat.

I highly recommend changing the keybinding to something else so you don't accidentally use all caps in text chat.

^^ Agreed.

I personally moved to Left Alt keybind. Puts comms directly under my left thumb for fast and easy chatting while moving.

Yeah, that gets annoying, but i think a lot of MWO players realize that an all caps text in this game is usually just the result of the VOIP keybinding and not someone trying to shout at people.

Yep, and after "CONTACT C4, FERRET" I'm usually tapping the caps lock button, then "oops caps." I probably ought to macro it at this point >.>

Settings --> Audio
There is a check box. Can't remember if it is enabled or disabled by default.
