Please tell me where in my post I suggested or even referred to joining a unit apart from saying being in a unit allows a player to gain experience with the same people doing the fundamental things that improve the probability of victory???

If you have played FP as a solo, you know how often anyone bothers to use chat to communicate, let alone the in-game VOIP. Even when someone does use VOIP, you also would have noted the "I know what I am doing, don't tell me what to do" players.

The statement may have been obvious but obviously many do not get it.

The truth is that MWO is, in every mode you want to play, a Team Vs. Team game.

If two teams of equal skill fight, one full of "don't tell me what to do" and the other willing to play as a team, the latter will almost always win.

Since the people in a group are there to play as a team, the group has more chance to win.

Now, put all this in a mode where you have a high degree of attrition (48vs48) and the difference is amplified.

Simply put, even as a solo, if you are willing to play by the mode (as a team), you have good chances of winning (using in-game VoIP, chat, etc.).
If you're not willing to play by the mode, don't play the mode.

Or learn that you're not a snowflake, and you could be more usefull*, even if not that skilled, as a member of a team. (not necessarily in a group, if you cannot for whatever reason)

EDIT: grammar.

*as a "tool". I think many don't like to consider themselves as a tool. They don't understand mankind is what it is because has learned to overcome difficulties working as a "team", bending nature to their will.
Snowflakes, in nature, simply die.

Once I saw a toddler jump into the deep side of a pool. He had snow clothes on, kinda weird for July. He sank quite fast. Being with a large group of friends [unit/gang/etc] we just watched, laughed, and yelled "ggclose".

Moral of the story - know when you're in over your head, and don't complain because you jumped in anyway. There is a plethora of units willing to take even the most part-time solo warrior. Your first step should NOT being clicking "launch", it should be checking out the recruitment forum.

I don't think it's even necessary to join a unit. To play FP it would be enough to follow the lead, or (even better) try to lead.
Surely there are so many players that don't want to "commit" to a Unit's obligation that it's hard for me to think that all of them are only shy.

I think most even ignore what's the minimal effort asked from the Units (low on most cases), or it's beneficial side: an improved experience of the game.

There are very few competitive-only units.

Personally, MWO is my first Team PvP game played with others over TS. I could not go back to a Solo experience.

OP, you do not strike me as one of those people others in this thread have labeled as "don't tell me what to do". You seem to be genuinly interested in learning the game mode and that is great. We need more people like you in FP, it's just that a lot of people here have been hearing the same things about the eeeeviiiil 12 mans over and over so they are a bit cynical. With that said, your best chance of winning in FP is to get in a group. It doesn't even have to be a unit. I may be spoiled here in the FRR but most factions have a TS hub where people of all units and even solos who find the courage to come out of their shells hang out, form groups and generally play the game together. It is very easy going and people come and go as they like. House Marik seems to have a pretty active faction hub just like the FRR so if the purple bird is your thing you should look into their faction hub at
housemarik.enjinvoice.com. No password needed

If you on the other hand would like a taste of viking mead. You can find all the information you need about getting to the FRR teamspeak here: http://mwomercs.com/...hub-ts-server/.

Lastly, a short word about units. A lot of solo players seem to believe that all units are these paramilitary hardcore groups that force dropdecks and playtimes on people and then go "ain't got time for that". When in fact, while these units exist, most of them are just people wanting to play MWO together with not much of any formal demands regarding play times or drop decks. My unit, the Shieldwall of Rasalhague, is about as casual as you can get. Our only demand for membership is that you check our forum (http://theskjaldborg.com/index.php) once every 3 months. Of course we welcome people to get more engaged, but it is hardly any demand.

Hope to see you on the field :)

True, but only for a few factions and ONLY if you use TS.

There are a few faction hubs where people who are not in units (or small units) go to look for a team. If you ever dropped against an FRR or Kurita team that didn't look like a 12-man but played like it, then you've experienced how a 12-man on teamspeak is different from 12 pugs on VOIP. BTW most pugs apparently turn off VOIP to enhance the solo experience.

There are also a few large units such as MercStar that will allow non-member tag-alongs - as long as you're willing to listen, defer to them, and take advice.
