Just got my free Champion mech by completing the scouting event. Was pretty excited and chose the RVN-3L(C), mostly because I had the basic variants of the other three and figured I'd try something new.

I am not a great light pilot but I have mastered a few of light chassis. And I have heard the 3L is a decent mech and I see many people playing them to decent effect.

I have run three matches so far, and I have to say, I am the worst Raven pilot in the world. Please tell me it gets better? I am so bad in this thing I can't get above an = for PRS after a victory!

I am running the standard build, as the 2ERLL with ECM seem to be the way to go. It seems in that build I get hit 2 times while I think I am sniping undetected and am dead. Not sure what is able to kill me so fast from so far away as I am pretty sure I am not getting hit with a guass rifle.

If I move constantly and try to stay at distance the same thing seems to happen. One second I have no damage, the next I am dead and I am too far on the fringes of the battle for that to happen.

The third match I figured I try more of a brawler build, another mistake. I ran 3ML and 2SRM4's with an XL 285. I did the most damage in this one and seem to take more than 2 shots, but still got rocked trying to bank and weave through while the other mechs were distracted by my teams big boys. Still I ended up getting rocked early on.

I have to say I have never died so easily in a light (including my Jenner's).

If there is a trick to playing these please let me know as I'd like to learn how it works.

Thanks

It's a good build, but they set up the armor wrong: reduce your rear torso armor to 6-7 across the board and shift that to the front. When you're not shooting, hide. Peak around corners on the right, shoot, hide. When not shooting, and taking fire, take it on your left side.

I'll add that you want to peek with your right side, shield with your left. Try not to reveal more of yourself than you need to shoot. Move, shoot, change position. Stay at as great a range as you can from the melee. Oh and run as close to overheating from firing as you can without actually overheating. I've gone 3 on 1 to win pug matches with the 3L.

I actually do the same thing with one of my Urbies, though it is left peek since the lasers are on the left and it's slower (and runs hotter).

Your not feeling out the enemies location first. You have to know where they are and find the best place to trade from. Make sure that laser is going to hit perfect before you shoot, take the component that matters, never forget the weak parts. High point = Security.

Also, bear in mind that ECM only means people can't get a lock on you - if you're standing out in the open, people can - and once they realise you're an ECM Raven, will - still shoot you

So I've run both of the builds you're running and I've run a sensor package raven with 3 mpl. If your not sure where to shoot from flank. Never engage head on if you can help it. I'm running my raven as a 3ml 2 srm4 currently with ecm, ams 1t ammo for ams and I think 1.5t ammo for srm and a 295xl. You can get huge damage games in the raven but if you strike first and the enemy notice you you're smoke. Target mech and just sit under cover until you're sure of their loadout and poke carefully. If you can manage your incoming damage and do some effective outgoing damage you'll see pretty good games. And get behind heavies and assualt whenever you can drop an alpha and run. Hide and seek is the name of the game if you're not using the erll build.
