Seriously. When I first started playing I tried them all. Assaults were slow and boring, mediums were squishy and slow, lights were fun but I popped before I could do as much as fart in the enemy's general direction. Heavy felt just right, so I went with one. I played for a while and ultimately put the game down due to boredom and a general inability to get better. My aim improved, my understanding improved, but I still felt static.

When I picked the game up again, I tried to tough it out in my heavy because it's always recommended to elite your chassis. After a frustrating match, I hopped in a trial Locust for kicks and, my god, was it fun. I only did 200 damage but zipping in and out of mechs, blasting faces, dodging bullets; it renewed the whole experience for me. I was still hesitant to actually buy a light, seeing as my skill in a heavy began to improve after piloting a light, but in the end I did and I don't regret it.

My point is, as a new(ish) player, if you get to the point where you feel like you've plateaued, frustrated, or just plain bored, try out the other classes again. You may find that your new found experience will alter how much you enjoy playing a different weight class. Don't be afraid to branch out. There's no point to grind through and elite a mech you're bored of playing.

Agreed.

As a brand new player you will likely not have the skills needed for Lights and Assault Mechs, we usually recommend Medium or Heavy Mechs because they are more forgiving than the extreme weight classes, however after you have learned the basics you may find you can handle something faster or heavier.

Also just because 2 Mechs weigh the same does not mean they will handle the same, for example the 30 ton Mechs, Spider (very fast and agile scout/harasser), Arctic Cheetah (slower and less durable than the Spider but much more firepower), Kit Fox (works well as a sniper or bodyguard) and Urbanmech (not anywhere near as much of a joke as people thought it would be, 360 torso twist, decent firepower, slow but not that slow) each play completely different.

Good call

Mastering lights was one of the most fun experiences I had in this game.

Lights are my go to class for those days when my team mates a so and so.

And they are the closest thing we have to a COD/Quake vibe.

I like it

Fast mechs for buzzz (I can think when I buzzz)

Slower mechs for thinking and big bada Booming

I have an interesting build/Mech. I wondered my Kit Fox has ECM AND 3 AMS slots.

It's reason IMO is covering other mechs with ECM and AMS, in effect shooting down missiles coming to them. I can run to a teammate who is being rained on and shut it down. It is kind of cool, lol. Sometimes I will carry a 5 LRM just to show them another target or to join in. I've found that having Mechs shooting LRMs back are just wasting missiles as I shoot them down.

with that sort of build I generally take this

I stick with the assaults and act as an umbrella as well as helping shoot at their targets, if you are with a Direwolf, a Banshee and an Atlas the enemy is unlikely to target you, although I find that sort of a role far more satisfying playing with a group than in Solo queue

Solo queue was definitely one of the reasons why heavy didn't work for me. In a heavy, I was very reliant on my team when it came to anything. As long as my team pushed and stayed together, I could easily rack up over 800 points of damage. Although all too often I would be in a push and the faster units would wimp out and run away; leaving the slow guys to get torn apart.

As a light, I felt more in control of the flow of the battle, than a slave to it. It's still reliant on having a team that knows when to take advantage of an opportunity, but even in bad games I still felt like I was able to deal some real damage. Getting the highest team score in a light is extremely satisfying, to say the least. Which brings up another point: the grind. It's so much easier to sit through making an average of 250-400k a match as opposed to under 100k. It really opens up a lot.

Funny story time. I was in canyon network and decided to take a few pot shots at a heavy who was infront of two of his buddies from up high. Instead of searching for me, the pilot turns his mech around and blasted his teammate in the face behind him LOL. That couldn't have gone any better.

Also, good call on how different mechs handle. I started off in a Locust but ended up buying a cheetah to stay clan (to fit my heavy purchase). Despite all the talk, I really grew to miss the speed of the Locust. Even elited, the cheetah still feels slow. I'm definitely going to just buy a Locust or try a Jenner out in the future.

Boredom was my worst enemy. My first mech was an EBJ and second was a shadow cat (didnt even master them) but the credit grind took so damn long i was sick to death of em by the time i got some credits together. I was good at them dont get me wrong but you can only play so much of the same thing before you wanna puke and i have like a 4 match attention span lol.

Ended up buying a whammy pack + BW and a centurion mastery pack and started working on those but because of the attention span issues i ended up buying a locust and ended up selling all of my clan crap to buy a king crab. I have enough mech bays to master all of it and i have to say im a lot happier now that i got variety even if not a damn thing is mastered yet.

It doesnt seem to hinder me any tho. Im tier 4 and i group up with my boyfriend whos tier 5 and end up wrecking face because I play stuff i enjoy. Doesnt matter what mech or build as long as im happy playing it. I dont care a single jot whats meta, and whats an awesome top tier mech or all that crap I just play what interests me and do well in it anyways and i havent regretted any of my purchases.

And my attention span issues taught me that I enjoy every weight class when in the mood and since i stuck with all my IS stuff and kept trying even if i didnt get it at first I eventually got the hang of every class. Know yourself and your enemy, it will make you a better player. At least it did me lol.

Playing different weight classes and roles can (and often will) considerably boost your skill and fun in this game!

Sometimes i just want to be stompy and take out one of my Assaults or heavy Heavies for a hot brawl with big damage and lots of screen flashes.
Sometimes i feel sneaky and field my Nova or BJ 'mechs to move from over to cover and destroy enemy 'mech components left and right to cripple them, leaving them to my teams fatties to finish.
Sometimes i feel like a teamplayer and exclusively stick to support/recon.
Sometimes i want to go fast beyond anything else and take out my lights while always riding on the heat cap.
And sometimes i care less about raw damage numbers but want to be in total control of the match and field my (t)rusty "nano-atlas" (aka COM-DK, which surprisingly is still one of my best 'mechs, even in tier 2 and regardless of whatever the current meta is Posted Image ).
