the menu from MW4 is a pretty good start...

what other games have menus like this? i know chromehounds does but i don't have a screenshot, planetside 2 does, and it changes with context, depending on the vehicle you are in e.t.c.

the battlezone series does

Also.. the 98 battlezone remake is still my favorite game of all time. So good...

Pardon the cynicism but will many honestly use the Command Wheel and will it be effective in Quick Play at say, T3 or T2?

The thing i wanted was hinted/confirmed in the devlog. "Enemy spotted!" with temporary marker on the radar.

I would also like :

-MOVE!
-MOVE YOU *******!
-ARE YOU MOVING YET?
-TRY SHOOTING BACK!
-PRESS R
-IT'S FINE TO BE ShOT AT, WE ARE AT WAR.

we need that, so much. There would be more lol'ing and less bitching in voip.

Or just "Eyes up!" for short.

Actually, from some of the descriptions of the command wheel, it will do things that even VOIP alone doesn't allow for... like for spotters to actually mark the locations of hidden mechs on the mini-map, rather than call out largely incorrect map grids.

It also allows commanders to issue more specific commands, like highlighting primary targets.

Also, when a player has contact with an enemy, he need not try to disengage and figure out exactly where he is, and where the enemy is in relation to him... he can just pop up the command wheel and the game does the rest.

Once people learn to use it, the sheer accuracy and frequency of calls should go through the roof.

I don't expect it to be very useful. Just how integrated will it be with the battlemap? Will it just be generic phrases that will be spammed all match? I really don't see how it will be better than VOIP.

"Very" integrated, according to PGI.

The mini-map is changing too... getting bigger and showing a lot more of the overall map, rather than just your local area.

How often have you heard over VOIP or in the chat window, "Found the enemy," or "I need help over here." Followed by a few seconds of silence. Followed by "where the hell is 'here'?"

Or even, "I see some in H6." Followed by, "no, I'm IN H6, and there's noone here. Do you mean H9?"

So when you use the "help" command, it shows up on the mini-map exactly where you are. When you broadcast an enemy position to the team, it shows on the map. Those two things alone are WAY better than VOIP. And how about drop-calling? Specifiying targets for your team? You want BB to be targeted, select it, and it broadcasts to the team. Everyone can now see where BB is. No more having to guess where in a crowded field of mechs BB is.

Also a bonus... I'm sure the command wheel - since it also plays audible commands and will likely add messaged to the chat window in addition to adding blips on the map - will feature mutliple language support. So when you, a player that speaks English, calls out a target in grid F7, the guy on the other end, who's German, will actually be able to understand what you actually said. VOIP doesn't come with a translator module. Command Wheel likely will.

How about, "Do us all a favor and just eject!" JK... though at times I really do think this.

On a serious note....

"Move to X-Coordinates"
"Defend X-Coordinates"
"Attack X"
"Fall back to X-Coordinates"

On the free trial of that sword fighting game I forget the name of all I did was spam the battle cry button laughing the entire time. Then I got bored of it. :)

I think this will be used 100 X more than VOIP was maybe more eventually.

If I can rekey maybe two of the most used comms like I have UAV and artillery then it will be great. Or learn how it works really well as part of gameplay like piloting. I hope it adds to atmosphere.

Maybe they can add different accents some time. :) I would get a kick out of a Scottish accent. :)

Another problem with usage of voip that i hope is fixed with commo-rose is knowing who talked, both the name and mech on the battlefield. The icon is too small and away to have time to know who said or ask anything. Because i sure as hell dont follow a charge if i cant figure out if it was called by a guy hiding behind everyone who need more sacrifice to inflate his score or the assault themselves who are about to charge for real.

People who are offended that mwo isnt a pve solo game wont be able to mute the commo-rose like they do with voip.

This is something i clearly remember asking for, like 2 years ago. Never thought it would happen. So hope there is. We just have to be the strong patient type.

Yup, as helpful as VOIP is for forming strategies and then communicating complicated information on the fly, there's nothing quite as good as the Command Wheel will be at providing drirect audio-visual cueing that is completely unambiguous.

Someone spotted the enemy? Cool... now that info is right there for me to see. I don't have to interpret or figure it out.

And you're right... you won't be able to outright ignore it, and there will be no language barrier.

As long as we can get people to actually USE the system, it will be MUCH easier to coordinate in matches than before... especially in Pugs.

Map integration is the useful bit.
Being able to place a marker indicating exactly where you are talking about is a big improvement over the usual VOIP "they are uh G9, no I7 uh yeah that direction its hard to judge".
Being able to place a "look here!" marker is better than "hey you one of the stalkers turn around there is an ecm light sniffing your butt"
Being able to highlight current focus target helps a lot vs cycling through everything to find Charlie Atlas.

Quick text chat, not so much VOIP can do that better right now but is under used.

Of course in PUG land the markers will probably be abused reducing their usefulness. But PUG will be PUG.

Hopefully the markers are small and dont cover up bits of the map like command icons.

So you think that someone who can't select the correct words to convey information will select the right preset command to say what they want?

Good luck with that.

If they lack the basic understanding that yelling HELP without a where and if possible why is useless they will likely continue to convey useless information no matter what medium or tools they have available.

I would say there's a level of built-in accuracy using the Command Wheel. Many people lack the experience or quick wit necessary to coordinate where they are on a map, where they're pointing, and how far they're actually looking in relation to the map grid... doing all of that on the fly while avoiding getting shot at or returning fire and trying to run the comms.

The Command Wheel takes guess work and translation out of the equation. Point where you want to mark, bring up the wheel, click the right option, marker appears on map and notice goes out to team. It's one key press, and one click, and the right information is conveyed. Far easier than trying to do the same even through VOIP.

So yes, I expect folks who usually aren't able to get the right information out will be able to do so much more easily and more accurately with the Wheel...

ESPECIALLY the usually talky morons who think they're online generals, who sit in the back shouting about what everyone else should be doing but can't tell their own ******* from their elbow. I fully expect that the utility of their particular brand of chattiness will go up by miles with the Wheel.

Its really interesting how much effort was put into this. Any interesting voice actors and actresses?

Really I am surprised there isn't any peeks at this new feature.

Be interesting to see if they have a turn it off button as well, just like Voip, then it will be just as useful.
