What do you guys think would be some of the most fearsome and respected non-mech' units possible for PVE? Clan and IS alike?

Artillery. If it is correctly implemented in the game.

If we're talking effectiveness in battletech then your nightmare would be Gnomes riding Epona Primes.

If we're talking what would be effective in MWO as computer spawned things (keeping era in mind)... running across SRM Carriers as you turn a corner would suck. They'd die stupid quick but you'd already have taken 60 SRMs to your face.

Not much, because they'd have to basically let us have a full-scale vehicle construction system or most armored vehicles would either have to deal with energy based layouts (which for vehicles is incredibly tonnage-intensive past the most basic of weaponry) or choke on being badly underloaded in terms of munitions for MWO play.

Well if they never figure out how to get AI to miss you, then the Alacorn tank is going to hurt, a lot.

Are we including Aerotech in this... because there are quite a few nasty customers there... The 85-ton Xerxes has 2 UAC/20s and 2 ERLLs. You've got the Chippewa and Riever as classics. The 95-ton Hydaspes is mean too... 3 ERLL, 6 MPL, 2 SSRM-6, and 2 LRM-15. Clan Aerospace will mess some stuff up.

Shrek PPC carrier, basically an Awesome 8Q at a fraction of the price.
SRM carrier,10 SRM6s for the price of a 3025 tech 25 ton light mech.
Demolisher heavy tank, almost as dangerous as a King Crab 000.
Savannah Master, if you think this one's a joke, check out the BV and CB values, now imagine a few dozen or a hundred or so of these swarming your mech lance.

There's a lot more that I missed, infantry with any kind of weapon automatically becomes better than the equivalent value in mechs if you can get the unit into cover, the same goes for most battlearmor but especially Elementals.

Since a PvE game would likely have a working economy and resource management component, the trick is getting the most bang for your buck. For the price of a single Locust you could buy a dozen Gabriel hovertanks and use them to swarm enemies 12 (or more) to 1 at 243 kph.

Blanking on the name, but in terms of sheer firepower they had essentially a mobile fortress that had to go on rails as it was too heavy for anything else.

Of course, there is also dropships.

My top 10 list of City fighting units:

Elementals
Infatry
Demolishers (3025 variant with AP Ammo GF'ingG)
SRM carriers
Annihilators
Hunchback IIC
Hunchback
Urbanmech IIC
Urbanmech URM-60L
Urbanmech

Anything in that list, sucks to bump into in a city....

I think it is because I am a MechWarrior player. Vehicles to me are target practice (fodder really) until the mechs show up.

I'm sure it is a lot different in TT, but that isn't my background.

Elementals are unique though, so as for non-mech units, I like those.

The reason i call out the 3025 Demolisher with AP rounds as that twin AC/20's that cause a chance at an internal crit with every hit. Unlike mechs, tanks are not effected by weapons heat, they always have enough heat sinks to be heat netural, this makes them very dangerous. At one point, due to the cheapness of them in BV terms as well as effectiveness for their cost, they had to be nerfed into the ground to where they are easy to destroy, but still pack an insane amount of punch for the BV cost.

Some of the toughest tanks to take on in BT:
