Ghost heat is calculated between ER Small Lasers and C-ER Medium lasers. I'm guessing this is a mistake. I fired my 4ermds and a 6 smalls and promptly exploded despite them being separately only 70% of my heat gauge.
This is an oversight I'm sure.

Not a mistake, design decision to limit alphastrikes/make clans less OP. Some weapons are in "linked penalty groups", as smurfy calls it.
For example: Large Lasers, ER-Large Lasers and Large Pulse Lasers are in one group, firing more than 3 of any combination of those will result in a heatpenalty.

It seems like a mistake until you consider that Novas, Gargoyles, and Executioners could easily have 72-damage pinpoint alphas. That would be pretty broken.

And there is an in-game warning icon in the mech lab in the upper left hand corner.
Also, did you have Override active? The dice roll on where the 20pt damage hits for exceeding override does include the cockpit, which can not survive that..
Overheating without Override enabled sends that damage just to the CT.

If I remember correctly, that isn't always true. I'm not quite sure when it was, but I could swear I remember having an overheat that went to a different section that the CT. At the time, I am rather certain Override was NOT enabled, so it's likely the chances of not being CT without Override are just seriously decreased.
