Happy to say that the shrinkening has made the dragon xl friendly once again. Feels like a big crab now.

Not seeing it still small engine.

Not much of a FPer so can't speak for Dragons there. The 5N with its -30% UAC jam chance seems to come closest to the pre-nerf 1N in dps. I've had the most success in QP with this build:

http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/mechlab#i=23&l=0b871f4c3ef5c809408302ba2058869c3873a100

In my experience the 1N is a ghost of itself for two reasons.

1) Direct nerf to the AC5 fire rate, and without that fire rate your other weapons can't pick up the slack to let you brawl. I went xl and bumped up the two mlas to erll and now I play it at the farther end of mid-range, but it's annoying when you have an arm laser, a torso laser and an arm autocannon that all have to be aimed different ways to hit. Considering throwing an erppc on the left torso and seeing how that works.

2) The competition now from both IS and clans is a bit stiffer with all the new mechs out lately as well as older ones that now have better quirks. Doesn't mean I don't take my 1N out every so often, but I feel right to say that Dragons are back to being played like they used to before the 1N got good for a little while--as slow, fragile, oversized mids.

I recently purchased a trio of Dragons (1C, 1N, 5N) and I've been tinkering to find something that works for me. I just finished up the Basics on all three this weekend, so now it's on to Elites.

I've had a lot of success with this DRG-1C. 360XL, 4xMPL, 1xSRM6 (2t ammo), and 18 DHS. Right arm is empty, but fully armored (plus quirked for Structure and Armor) to shield. Amazing cooling efficiency means I only need to worry about heat on the really hot maps. It plays like a tanky medium. For modules, I go with Seismic, Derp, and Cooldown for MPL and SRM6.

I just put this DRG-5N together a couple of days ago. 1x UAC5, 1x SRM4, 2x MG, 2x ML. It is doing pretty well, though it has some noteworthy flaws. It's slower than the 1C and requires much more enemy facing time due to its anemic alpha. It excels as support for the team's assaults and does some pretty amazing work in the latter stages of a match once internals are exposed. For modules, it's Seismic, Derp, UAC5 Cooldown, and either ML Range or SRM4 Cooldown.

The variant I've had the most trouble with is the 1N. The hard point locations are a mess and they don't play together with each other very well. DRG-1N Version #1 has 2x SRM4, 1x LB10X, and 1x Flamer (alternative 1x MG and 0.5t ammo). The mediocre alpha locks it into the same role as my 5N, but the 5N does it better. For modules, the 1N gets Seismic, Derp, SRM4 Cooldown, and LB10X Cooldown.

for the 1C: I recommend this: 1lbx10, 1srm 6, 4 medium lasers, goes 90k... : http://mwo.smurfy-ne...416f2f9c63e7773

alternativley drop 1 dhs for ac10 if u want more pin point damage.

as for the 1n: best i can come up with for u http://mwo.smurfy-ne...8f535d2917664c2
1lbx10, 2srm 4, 2 medium laser

I still have XL on all my Dragons, but I play them as lights. This means, run around, never stop, and never EVER go at the front. I hunt down wounded mechs, spot LRM boats hiding behind enemy lines, and I get decents matches.

Just thought I would pass this on the Dragon Flame Ac20 build, I dont know if anyone has noticed but that Ac20 just blows up from almost any damage I dont know if its cuz of how big the hit boxes are on the torsos or what anyway.

To attempt to keep the weapon alive drop your heat sinks down to singles and throw 2 of them on top of the Ac20 theres a chance you will lose the heat sink instead of the Ac20.

anyway hope this helps.

*necropost*

All of the following is Quick Play, mind you, with the exception of the 1C which I refitted for Faction Play.

***************

Been running lb10x / srm6 / 4x mplas (+ cooldown modules) with xl300 on my Flame for a month or two now and I've been wrecking with it.

Ran gauss / 2x erll (both left torso) with xl300 on my 1C for a while and that was the best build I've managed to get out of it since pre-Clan days. Now I've switched it to 4x llas which I like less if I'm totally honest, but is one of the builds on the RKA tier sheet so...eh. It does work though, that it does.

I've been running ppc (torso) / 2x ac5 on my 1N with xl300 and that seems to be the best combo I've found for it. You lead the target about the same for both weapons so no messy attempts to keep a bead with the ac5s while trying to paint 'em with lasers. Tried an erppc first, but ended up running hotter than I was comfortable with. Good support mech.

On the 5N I ended up with 2x llas / uac5. Doesn't sound like much but if you can get a few seconds of unmolested dps on somebody it adds up quicker than most folks realize. Another good support mech. (I have seen some people run this with 2x lpl instead of 2x llas and seems like a decent idea, haven't tried it myself though.)
