As I'm getting closer and closer to T2, one of my friends is still Tier 4.
We play together pretty often, and I'm a little curious what happens with Grouped up players, and PSR.

Does it average the PSRs together?
Does it just take the highest into account?

Teams and PSR are pretty disjointed. I'm T3, and I've played with and against T1 12-mans.

Tiers are typically matched in a +/- 2 window, so Tier 4 players regularly play with Tier 2 players.

Group queue just goes by PSR stats, AFAIK. Having 1 or 2 high PSR players in a group might result in getting paired up against groups with similarly lopsided skill distribution, or it might not. It really depends upon what else the MM has to work with.

In solo queue, you shouldn't see more than a 3 tier wide distribution of players, with how evenly the individual players are matched being variable to the available player pool (and sometimes other weirdness, for example a player skilling up a new mech or trying a mech kitted for a radically different playstyle than they are used to will skew their performance in ways that PSR can't handle).

T3 will play with all tiers.

So if you have a T3 anywhere near you, you will also play all tiers. Regardless if you are Tier 1 or Tier 5.

Well, not quite. At least in solo queue. If you are tier 1 you DO NOT play against tiers 4 and 5. If there's a tier 3 next you you? He's low man in the match. If you're tier 5 you don't play tiers 1 and 2. If there's a tier 3 next to you? He's high man in the match.

There's 2 averages that play into the matchmaker.

The first is the average PSR score for your group itself (remember, the MM works off PSR value, not "tier"). The second is the average PSR for the entire team the MM is trying to build within the game.

Your group may get pulled into a higher PSR match if the MM needs your group to lower a team that has too high an average, or your group may get pulled into a lower PSR match if the MM needs your group to raise a team that has too low an average.

This is, of course, only for Quick Play.

The Match Maker for Faction play says (in a purely metaphorical way) "be happy you got a match, even if you are a pug team with the average PSR of a rock against a 12-man of tier 1 players."

PSR technically averages your scores but....due to the much lower pop in group queue outside of prime time MM just says frack it and just makes the matches work.

Or I as I like to think of it, mech bay acquisition mode for skint people. Seriously... the number of folks I know who do it only for the mech bays is just sad. During better days I'd just gift them some MC for mech bays to avoid having to play it with friends who don't really want to play it. Plus I liked them and stuff and $10-20 wasn't really a big deal at the time.

When you play as a group - MM doesn't take into account your tiers. So, if you are both at T5 - you'll be facing 12-men T1 players. Enjoy Posted Image

Easy answer: Match Maker puts a gun in it's mouth and pulls the trigger.

Most likely you will notice little to no difference.

I'm sure it takes the highest tier and goes with that.

I've dragged friends as low as tier 4 all the way to tier 1 by grouping with them. They did not have fun. With a tier 4 alt however, grouping with them proved a lot more enjoyable as the MM didn't give us any of the usual tier 1 groups or players.
