It's been a while since I played with flamers, but they can be very entertaining. Shot at the cockpit, it's a wonderful blinding measure Posted Image

Not since they changed the graphics for the flamers. It doesn't blind people anymore.

One problem I ran into was that Flamers do make heat. In fact, a fair amount of it.

I'm trying things like 3 flamers and 9-12 SL. And setting them up on Fire control so they go one flamer and 3 lasers etc in a chain fire mode.

If they still worked like they did, I'd still be using them.
Instead, now they actually produce heat on the enemy, can overheat you very quickly -- and most of all... they fixed the alternating fire bug that had existed for about 5 years (yeah, five years). :( I told them about it in 2012. Nada.

Anyway. Now a single flamer has some good use. But best if you have low-heat weapons with it because it's just too intense... and the graphic is horrible. Looks like it might be from a blowtorch on Minecraft.

I need to somehow adjust buttons. I thought with 3 Flamers and 8 SPL I could open up the back of anything. But the heat just overwhelms me. And I have the SPL firing in chain fire in 2's.

It's fun to play with ideas. I ALWAYs go to a hot training ground before I enter a match.

My Stormcrows, although they are the same speed as my Kit Foxes, are not near as nimble and lack ECM.

I call switching around weapons etc..."dress up", lol like girls would their dollies.

I need to find a button just for the Flamers, this gaming mouse I bought could have a better button layout. Sneaking up on someone is not something a Stormcrow does well. As I once said my greatest success comes from assisting another teammate fighting even a very big mech.

If I had a unit, one of my first rules is that everyone fights with a buddy. This game is not about one on one. It is won by finding and using three on ones.

Over the last few days I found out something interesting that I did not know and might not know for a while if i was not practicing in the training grounds.

When you overheat and your Mech shuts down, it does damage to your mid torso.engine etc.

I've never read this anywhere or was told it. But it is good to know.

It may or may not do that.
First, it depends on howmuch heat you generated over the 100% threshold. If you just go slightly over then you wont likely take any damage. Go insanely over (see: B33f's Dire Star) then you could pop yourself.
Also, the damage is randomly distributed, and can burn any component, including your head.

If you override, the damage is distributed randomly. If not, it all goes CT.

With out doubt, BUT it has to be either a close range brawler, OR a fast mech than can heat fast and run...

Typically the best way to use them is 1 or 2 on a brawler with extra energy slots, (especially Clanners) Is you have to thnk more to add them.

Out of all my mechs 70+, i only have a couple that uses them effectively. If you have a couple extra energy slots on an assault or heavy with Dakka for example, if you wanna skimp on ammo and add a couple, it can be a good thing. IS on the other hand, you really have to commit to wanting to use them in a match.. though like i said, if you are a brawler, sometimes dropping a heat sink, and adding a flamer is way better.. especially the way brawlers love to hug people these days. I have no clue about group play, but pugs they can really work well..

Flamers are situational and teamwork depending Weapons.
The situations where I saw them working spectacularly well where:

-- Lightmech denial used on light or medium close range fire support platforms:

Most light strike mechs like SRM Jennys and Laser lights have hit and run style builds for striking and running when heat gets too high.

Use Flamers to take away parts of their strike ability.

Additionally i've seen some pilots running on Override to be able to use the full heat cappacity of their mechs and still be able to get away.

Those guys may just explode before noticing what was wrong.

-- Assault mech brawling support:

A scenario seen during late medgame to endgame. Assaults or heavys dancing it out. As a light or medium supporter you will be most likely ignored and able to enter the blind side of an enemy.

Now shut him down so your fatty will be able to give him some.

-- Light brawling: Some lights just don't have enough weaponports to be electronic supporters and able to hold themselfs against other lights. Like said above most lights got poor heatmanagement and will be easy pray when shut down.

This is what I find it best for. Normally I have to help someone else out since no one seems to want to help me out. Or at least i often cannot count on anyone so I try to jump into a pair already fighting, and that will often finish it.

I've found that by itself it is totally situational. After all this time I'm amazed that more players do not attack the same enemy. I've had times where this works great, then the other guy wanders off by himself. So many players do not finish attacks, they will switch to someone else before the first one dies. No one watches your back. Yesterday I moved to help someone and as the large Mech came at us. He then hid behind a building so the enemy Mech followed and killed me and this "teammate" of mine then tries to shoot it from the back. And he dies when if both of us would have kept attacking him, we would have won.

The Maps are also important. There are some maps where you can creep and sneak and others where you cannot.

With the right map and the right people, it can work well. With the wrong ones, it is useless.

With only one flamer it will take some time, but with multiple it can be VERY fast. At least 4 on a mech where flamers are a main feature, but 2 are ok as a backup.

They are definitely not a waste of tonnage (especially the clan variant than only weight 0.5t). You indeed won't shut down a mech by flaming it, but you will forbid it to shoot anything (but gauss and few ACs) without shutting down or take internal damage. Well done, it's extremely effective.
But they are only useful on a brawl, because their range is really short.

I need to find the time to look you up. I have my PT on and I'd like you to mount up to 6 flamers and hit me with one, then two, then three etc so I can see how long it takes. It is one thing to know the math but another to see it happen to you.

Everything must burn

Get the drop on someone, and instantly push them to 80% heat. 6 C-flamer for instant +27.0 heat/sec, and 8 C-SPL for a powerful one-two punch that isn't terribly hot.

For the record, most mechs only have around 60 heat capacity. +27 h/s is pushing them to riding the heat limit in about two seconds flat. And best of all? Flamers do NOT generate that much heat for the first couple of seconds of firing. This means that you start the fight with a cold mech, and they start with a burning hot one. It's great for 1v1 duels, but not so much in a teamfight when you can only effectively shut one mech down at a time.

Where did you get your math? I'd like to look at it.

I'm still looking to make the perfect FlameCrow. To get around the heat problems I'm using a number of them and firing them in two ways. The first burst is let's say 5 flamers on it's own button. Then on the next two buttons, I have 1 Flamer and some SPLs.

I "believe" that A) I need to get the other Mech to 90% ASAP and B) I need to keep it there. Without overheating myself.

So first a 5 Flamer blast. Then I take turns firing one Flamer and 3 SPL. So the 6th and 7th Flamers do not get that hot.

I feel like I need an LR weapon so I'm going to work a Clan ERLL in there somewhere. Otherwise, he is a one trick pony.

My Stormcrow and Kit Fox have the same top speed but the SCR has ZERO quirks while the Kit Fox has a number of them which makes it a lot more nimble.

My best targets are really assault mechs. Light mechs are simply too fast. As I said, I wait till someone from my team is in a battle with an enemy Mech and I run over and hit him in the back. 4 MGs, 2 SPL and a Flamer seems to work well as long as another mech is shooting it.

I also really wonder what it looks like when shot at you. I've backed up Kodiaks and King Crabs with my Kit Fox and a flamer or two. And I have somehow escaped having 3 enemy Mech around me so I do wonder if I'm semi-blinding them. I know also if their weapons are on their torso, it is hard to hit me while close. In fact, i've never been killed by the Mech i was attacking, but I have got it in the back from another.
