It's easy to just have a bad match or even day of them no matter how good you are. I have encountered plenty of big-name players in pug drops and killed them. While more skilled overall than most players, and unchecked against a team of less-skilled opponents they can go on a rampage, one wrong move or focused by multiple opponents and they get wasted just like anyone else. In the pug cue you are often at the mercy of your team of potatoes, and no matter how hard you carry they can fall apart and leave you alone facing half the enemy team.
I have had matches with 5 kills and 650ish damage, thinking everything is going well, and then my team suddenly evaporates and I get swarmed and finished off. I wonder what happened, then the post-game screen shows a Dire or Kodiak failing to break 50 damage, and I facepalm. AFKs, squirrel chasing, running from pushes, even the best players aren't going to do well in an environment like that.
Hell, sometimes you can just be at the mercy of bad map design. I played a match on polar highlands last week and got NARCd. Get NARCd on any other map and you can almost always find some cover to block missiles till it wears off, but not on this map. You can't do anything about it. No matter how good you are there is no counter for this situation on this map at all. Your dead, and you can't skill your way out of it. GG clothes.
