Been a few years since I've last played it though.

Let alone a house/clan military letting a Merc unit own and operate one of the house/clan military only assets....

Oh really only House/Clan military's own/operated WarShips? I didn't know that, for some reason I just assumed a big enough unit would actually be able to fund one, like maybe Kell or another top tier unit.

We can safely assume the dropship used by your merc company is the apocryphal "Talon" Dropship.
Which is visible in game at the space ports and on New Canton landed. This is also the only dropship that can hot-drop mechs into combat as well due to the nature of it's bay doors and can carry up to 1 lance of mechs. (This is the dropship used to dispatch the mechs and mechwarriorss into combat, a larger dropship or jumpship may be used to house the rest of the equipment and other staff)

However, it can only carry 4-5 mechs. So two in conjugation may be used which explains why on New Canton when you are hot dropped into battle the 2nd Lance is dropped further out.

It is also worth noteing, that Dropships are armed, even small ones like the above and the Leopard...
Hell the Leopard is actually a threat to mech forces:
2 x PPC
3 x LRM/20
5 x LLas
7 x MLas
This is in addition to the 4 mechs it can hot drop....

-snip-
mhm.
The Talon Dropship (MW4) had equiped the following weapons: 4 Large Lasers, 4 Clan ER Large lasers, and 3 LRM 10's.
Lasers alone that's quite a lot of firepower.

What I posted was the non upgraded tech Leopard, the upgraded ones get even more mean... ER lasers, ERPPC's, Pulse lasers and A-LRM20's...
Things only get worse the bigger the drop ship gets....
For example an Overlord:
6 x PPC
2 x AC/20
6 x AC/5
12 x MLas
3 x LRM 20
6 x LLas
On top of that 36 mechs and 3 areospace fighters....
Facing a drop ship should be a brown trousers moment for any mech pilot, but sadly ever MW game to date has either had them powered down, or dumbed down to be next to harmless.

at least MW4, none of the dropships with dumbed down -ish. All of them (minus the overlord) are smaller and thus weaker dropships that were not lostech (thus overall worse in tech but some had clan tech) and an overlord dropship was a brownpants moment for me- or that one mission you had to fight two at the same time in close proximatey.
Then again I played on difficulty settings like veteran or expert where 70% of the time your CT gets hit by an akpha (which would be for eg with the union dropship: 4 x PPC, 4 x Large laser, 4 x Gauss rifles", quite often some of the PPC's or gauss hit my ST or what ever but it's only MW4's mechanic of preventing 1 shot kills that sometimes saves my life.

As such in MW4 your just using a typical jumpship.
As for the MW4 dropship their has been some speculation that the "Talon" could be an early variant (early prototype?) or perhaps a predecessor of the Aurora. Reasoning behind this, their both lance carriers and generally look similar, the only known location of the Talon is on Kentares (IV) during the Fed Com Civil War (circa early to mid 3060s). The Aurora is stated to have had a few prototypes built before the fed com civil war delayed production, these prototypes served well notably at Kentares IV (where Mechwarrior 4 takes place) and New Avalon.
So both were at Kentares during the Civil war, both have similar lay outs and generally similar cargo capacity and the Aurora is supposed to be modular.
