Any idea how this will be setup? Somehow I just don't think it will be what most people are hoping for. My take is being able to upload my own decals (insignia or pinup nose art basically something unique) with or without PGI approval, for MC, either individually or by unit. It's the ultimate way to make your Mech stand out.

Think about destructible environment; people were asking for buildings looking totally wrecked or even eventually demolished. Vehicles crushed or destroyed. We got to knock over lamp posts and some trees, which are otherwise indestructible to any weapons fire. Posted Image

As they are working on it, they should set our expectations. Based on previous experience, I'm thinking what we are asking for won't be an easy thing and what we are going to get is some canned decals to "customize" mechs with for MC.

Listening to what conversations are happening in the community and then setting proper expectations will keep folks from being embittered when they get a mere shadow of what they have been excitedly talking about.

I could be totally wrong too. Maybe PGI will pull it off in style! I hope so. Posted Image

I know War Thunder has decals but I didn't realize that they had a custom decal functionality. Nice. I assume fom this above eply that World of Tanks has custom decal Functionality and also of course the recent Overwatch.

Haipyng since all the other games have custom decal functionality since you wouldn't be insulting MechWarrior Online for not having it if that was not the case, my question is do these custom decals cost their version of MC or their version of creds? Or are they rewards for rank?

I never mentioned any other games actually. It has been done with custom images in other games. Dawn of War comes to mind as does CS:Source "Sprays".

In those games the images uploaded needed to be a certain DPI and so many pixels by so many pixels and a certain color depth. This meant that the people making them had to have some experience with making images until people made tools to process any old picture into a format that worked with that particular game engine.

In those two games it was totally free to do custom decals or sprays (different profit models from MWO however). I'm assuming that give that camo patterns and paint are available for MC, so would decals.

It is certainly possible to do custom decals and it has been done before, but I have no idea if PGI is able to implement such a thing here. The real point of my post was, they should set the community expectations on decals to what they are working on, so we won't be disappointed if it doesn't meet what the community is buzzing about (like custom nose art).

Well, yeah, pinups are a given ... if you're an IS Pilot.

If you are a clanner, well, I suggest a nice selection of test tubes and other sexy lab equipment.

Well considering the vehicle customization in MechWarrior online leaves every single other game ever made in the stone ages, the addition of quality decals on top of existing awesome camos is a great thing. I don't consider lack of custom decals to be a problem.

I'm not being a cheerleader here, I am just being real. Where as many complaints on this forum come from an alternate reality many call "The Island". :)

Either way, again, decals sound great along with the comm wheel.

Did I mention MechWarrior Online vehicle customization puts every other game ever made in the stone ages? I am not talking about tons of colors and camos or even decals, I am talking about meaningfull vehicle customization, not the RNG kind either. Or the childs play rock paper scissors kind either. Or the pay to win kind, or the lvl and item grind kind either. Or even the gold ammo kind....

All I want for deckels is...

Equal Clan and IS affiliation representation, not just limited to those directly involved in the invasion. I want to see the option for CHH, CDS, CC, CNC, CSV, CFM, and all the other official Clans and IS organizations that are currently not represented in the game - especially if by this point in the timeline they're supposed to be present in the IS such as the Nova Cats, Diamond Sharks, and Steel Vipers.

I am actually agreeing with you ... on the quality of MWO's customization. This feels weird.

My concern with custom decals is not that of implementation, but of exploitation. If a client was to upload a custom decal that is a direct rip of another person's protected material, or if it was lewd enough to break the current rating for the game (if that is even a concern), than PGI cannot allow it to be used. That would mean either they disallow custom decals entirely or institute a review process for every custom decal uploaded to their servers. However, the process of review would probably quickly become backlogged, and anything that gets through the review process that still manages to break legal rules would be even bigger bad news for PGI directly, as they'd have put themselves in the position of policing it in the first place.

This was merely about tempering enthusiasm for decals with what we may get versus the Buzz. We have no idea what is actually coming.

I don't mean to bash PGI at all when I compared this to destructible environment, but it is a similar thing. People were buzzy about crumbling or demolishing buildings and what they got were knocking over trees and lamp posts. No one corrected that buzz or set the customer expectation around that and people were disappointed when it landed. Just about anything is possible in video games, but what we can realistically expect from the engine, performance and time investment to make it happen from the programmers is limited.
