What happened to playing a game for fun over the last 10 years?

When did playing a game as a fun simulator become an everything rides on your performance stress fest.

A little late to the party, but to answer the above questions about what has ruined the fun...

ONLINE MULTIPLAYER

That's what ruined it for everyone. We as humans are competitive by nature, and by having us all work against each other (even teammates are working against you, don't kid yourself), we become ultimately competitive and the idea of 'FUN' is not a part of being competitive.

Prior to the internet being used as a mainstream for gaming, Mechwarrior games did play better with joysticks.

However, now that we have online gaming (and the amount of truly singleplayer games can be counted on one hand), along with the lack of focus by the developers part (in this case PGI) to promote FUN instead of competitive gameplay, you are left with quick-scope, headshot, lag-induced raging gameplay.

there is no quick scoping in this game.....

I played Steel Battalion for 6 years I bought the game for one reason...The Joysticks and peddles!. I have never played a "Real " mech game with out a Joystick. I remember in MW4 the brawlers were deep in the furball with mouse and keyboard, the med range and snipers used Joysticks. I remember compensating to use a joystick and I had no problem killing with them, I used the EVO Cyborg and the Sidewinder.

After reading through these posts I have come to the conclusion that it really doesn't matter what you use because either way you will adjust your play style to your set up.

I can't wait to get my computer!.

sad i know

but i'm poor :P

Honestly though, as much as it it feels wrong to use a mouse, I'll probably try both ways and see if the mouse precision outweighs the "precision 2" immersion factor

**** that, mate! I salute you for sticking with old school sticks. Hell the one I use (can't remember what it is off the top of my head atm) is the same one I used to play MW3 and MW4 Vengeance and Mercs.

I switch back and forth between my old joystick and my mouse. I can see some of the accuracy differences but I still love the feel of the joystick to the mouse. Mouse may be accurate yes, but it does absolute crap in the way of immersion.

joystick provides continuous smooth tracking. it is probably very nice to use when simultaneously turning.

it really doesnt matter which is better as long as you pwn with your set up. i would love to play with a whole joy stick set up but that money i can spend in game instead.

hotas player reporting in!

and i can outpilot any mouse & kb users...

why?

because kb pilots got only 3 speeds -- full speed / full stop / full reverse... having a throttle gives me everything in between...

kb pilots use their left hand for 2 tasks... throttle & turning... with pedals, i can naturally use my feet to turn my mech... it was not easy to train my brain but now it is 2nd nature...

finally, my stick has an adjustable centering spring -- it acts like a sensitivity control so i loosen it up for light mechs and tighten it up for heavier mechs...

Why? Yeah HOTAS is cool and I could gush over the multi weapons control. My main reason? Because looking out of a cockpit with a headset on calling contacts while using a flight stick and throttle like the books, is just way more fun than flicking a mouse around and typing on a keyboard.

I suppose you use the joystick for torso...but how do you move in different direction ?

I can see how Mycrus does it with the pedals...but with your gear ?

I'm bought a Saitek X52 and rudders just for this game and I'm waiting to use them in a more integrated manner. On the matter of fine aiming I was thinking about this recently. Could this be rectified by using joysticks/throttle for crude wide range aiming and having Track IR/Oculus Rift Gyros as fine tune aiming help such as how Oculus Rift/Doom 3 works with Joystick/Rift integration. Really that gets really close to simulating the neural interface of the MW experience.

You should try it with a mouse and keyboard if you really think they only have full reverse full stop and full forward. You can tell someone who is using a joystick when you watch from the dead box because their aim is terrible. If you are actually capable of outpiloting people you would be doing even better with a mouse and keyboard.

This is pretty much my setup, except i use the X52 Pro.

I use this program to actually emulate the mouse.

http://atzitznet.dyn...use3/index.html

The trick is to have the sensitivity as high as when using a mouse. It is way better than the built in joystick control. It requires some tweaking, a good stick that can sense the tiniest hand motions, and an AWFUL LOT of practice. But once your muscle memory has properly built up it is great.

I'm an experienced FPS gamer using a mouse, yet using this config (only for MW of course), i feel i have gotten just as good and my statistic says the same. Aiming is smoother, leading/staying on target is a lot easier. Flick of the wrist accuracy is lower, it takes me about half a second longer to get on a far away target dead on than my mouse using lancemates. In close turning fights it's simply better than mouse for me. Most importantly it just feels right, steering a mech this way (I also use pedals for turning).

This is simply not true. As stated above, it all comes down to practice. My aim is pretty damn excellent...

Z-axis... Twist the joystick.

hmm..then on the stick you have too many controls i think...you have torso, you have directions and you have weapons. on the left you have only throttle and groups....so few controls compared with right...just seems imbalanced. Mycrus setup seems better.

I am intersted in buying a control system only for MWO but i would like to know their pros and cons before looking for one.

thanks.

nice topic, in the old mw4 days i used a TM hotas cougar with rudder pedals, to me nothing can beat rudders for torso twist ..... my rudder pedals have since died and I still have the hotas, truthfully, right now i am using the throttle with the 4 way rocker in the front for turning l/r, reverse and snap torso to center and use mouse for torso twist and groups 1,2,3 .... with the current setup i just could not get the throttle to control comfortably, i still practice it sometimes but the mouse just gives ME more control, I think the real feel factor with the full hotas is the best ... maybe i need rudder pedals again ... i think the best setup is whatever makes you happy for having FUN ... I pretty much suck but i love to play :)

Why do we NOT have VR stuff for the computer at this point? I work at Disneyquest. We opened in 1998 and we opened with several virtual reality attractions (featuring HMD mounts: http://en.wikipedia....mounted_display) that are plain out antiques now. Our techs have to fabricate the pieces for them as noone makes them anymore at all. Fifteen years later and its essentially an abandoned tech branch.

Hi guys, i am yet to fully intergrate with MWO as my PC is pretty old and couldnt run it above 3 frames p/s but within the next 2 months my new machine will be purchased and finally i can get stuck in!!
I find it interesting what some people have said about the joystick compared to mouse keyboard players, can see what sort of game backgrounds people have come from such as other PC FPS games where u can move mouse and ur aim reticule moves as fast as your mouse does and saying that joystick users will be 'handicapped'. Iv played World of Tanks and mechwarriors are basically walking tanks and i use a mouse on that game, however when u move your mouse to aim u can position it on your target very quickly... HOWEVER your turret will not line up and even when it has u have to wait a few seconds for it to have any accuracy.
I think MWO is going to have a similar feel to this (except be so much more awesome!!) and joystick + keyboard mouse users will be on a pretty damn even playing field, but its all about what u feel most comfortable using and what are efficient with. Like me personally I have a joystick that i used with MW4 and i plan on using joysticks with MWO unless my assumptions in this post (which is my first ever with my MWO account lol) are completely wrong and things really are way to hardcore and i find it easier with the mouse/keyboard setup then i will change to using it...

Now question time... as i said i plan to sue a joystick to start out with, its just now i own 2 joysticks

Logitech Attack 3 (used in previous MW4 doesn't have twist axis)
Posted Image
Logic3 Flight 2 3D (has twis axis)
Posted Image
Now i understand a lot of games only allow for 1 controller to be active at once, just it would be nice if i could try out my logic 3 3D attack for torso control and the Attack 3 for movement to try out for say some added realism and more exact control over my movemet...

sorry if this seems like a stupid question but if anyone knows 100% what the awnser is then i would be extremely thankful if you could share this information with me :P

See you all on the field soon!!
