Yes, another knee-jerk reaction thread. Ironically I'm usually against these. I think I'm going to take a small break for a bit to avoid the flood inevitably coming for the next week or so.
Something very important about the old minimap that seemingly Russ and a lot of others have completely forgotten about:
See that bottom left diagram? The one that gives you an overview of your base and turret orientation? I'm using WoT here as irony because Russ essentially used WoT as his reasoning of doing this. And yes, it still does it better.
The old minimap wasn't just important because it showed you a close range overview of your surroundings, it was also integral in giving you a sense of your orientation relative to your 'mech! On top of that, it allowed you to connect your orientation to your surroundings and, it has always been an important part of MWO. It was actually a little clever in that it combined a minimap with a compass tool. MW4 did this, I'm pretty sure previous MW games did this too.
The B key of course was your extra map function that gave you an overview of the entire match. If you didn't use it before, you were doing it wrong. I don't understand why PGI didn't simply improve the usability of said function, or add to the minimap.
Now, I could have accepted the change to minimap icons. That's not too bad, potentially even useful. I'm growing to like them. But there was literally no reason to remove the orientation and zoomed in nature for the minimap. It makes the minimap... well, completely useless, because all it does it give me a less useful version of the B button. If you're defending this, I'd quesiton your rationality, honestly.
