I came to MWO from MWLL, which had a very similar mini-map, however MWO's iteration of it left out some very important parts. 2 of which are absolutely ESSENTIAL if PGI wants to do a non-rotating map:
1. The map is too zoomed out.
I "get" that PGI plans to introduce a zoom function in the future, but even with that in mind, the new mini-map is absolutely horrible in this regard, due to the fact that the maps aren't perfect squares.
So much space is lost trying to fill that small space with the entire map. I'd hazard a guess and even say that a good 1/3rd of all available space on the mini-map is simply out-of-bounds/non-usable map area. This is completely unacceptable, and IMO the most important thing they absolutely need to hot-fix IMMEDIATELY (if they don't do a full revert).
I don't care if they chop off some of the edges of the map in order to do it, leaving a few areas you can't see on the mini-map, but it needs to be zoomed in closer. There should be no "non-map" area displayed.
Best solution: Zoom the mini-map to a radius of around 800m or so, centered about the player, and have it follow the player as they move around the map. This would allow a player to see important grid locations in their immediate vicinity at a higher resolution.
2. No torso/leg orientation.
This is the one that caught me by surprise, and is also likely what caused my spatial disorientation, which led to me feeling nauseous. It's an absolute nightmare trying to cross-reference the torso orientation at the top, the enemy locations on the bottom, and the player icon orientation, to the point I'd even say it's impossible.
If this new mini-map is to succeed, there absolutely needs to be a representation for torso and leg orientations on the mini-map itself.
Best solution: Just copy what MWLL does:
