Deathball is a boring and oafish tactic with no finesse. It's also usually the best you are going to get out of PUGs. Sometimes however they manage something bit more advanced like forming a firing line or executing a simple flank. It's glorious when that happens.

Most the time NASCAR starts because of this FLANK maneuvers that seems to be the only one anyone knows about.

There are more ways to fight then just to get behind or beside someone. Also flanking such mobile vehicles isnt always the best option. They can change position just as fast as you can most the time so its often better to just use numbers and pick fights you know you can win. (2v1, 2v3 etc.)

Sorry all I should have made it more clear.
By Death Ball I mean the players just get "Together" and move as a Unit.

I In No Way Include Nascaring.

Many times I use one of my Daishi... So, I HATE Nascar.

I don't mind pug deathball when it's a flanking steadily pushing deathball which keeps in mind the speed of the assualt mechs, not a death ball that heads strait for the middle of the map and then camps because that's when you often become encircled and picked off like fish in a barrel.

Regardless, pug deathball is a lot better than everyone just running off in random directions spread out all over the map.

Pugs can be frustrating at times especially due to the most often case of zero communication, not locking targets and seemingly not knowing to focus fire the solid red triangles let alone calling them out. Usually just have to follow the muted sheep, especially when piloting an assualt mech lest I find myself all alone with a locust and cheetah up my butt. Sometimes this cannot be avoided when I'm the only really slow mech such as my IS Mauler at the NASCAR races.

Hopefully much of the above will become much less common after I reach Tier 1?

Edit: This is just the perspective of someone who's only been playing for around 2 months in total. This account is still just Tier 3 and my other exactly 20 days old IS account just tier 4. I'd probably have already hit Tier 2 by now if not for spending some time leveling up a fresh second account. I also spend more time reading the forums and watching MWO youtube videos than I spend actually playing the game.

NASCAR happens when the whole team tries to flank the enemy and the enemy is usually trying to do the same. What I meant by flanking is when an element of your force, few mechs or a lance, manages to get to enemy's side or rear while they are engaging your main force. Risky, but glorious when it works.

So far my experience has been that in QP (and FP by large extent) players "get together" out of convienience, not because they feel they should work together.

there are times when the death ball stops working, like when it stops in a choke or stops being a ball (nascar), or it gets so tight that only a small number of mechs can fire and team damage is certain. its still the best way to move across open terrain (usually aggressively towards an enemy, sitting in open terrain is just stupid). there are a lot of things that can go wrong. a well coordinated death ball is a dangerous thing.

Its a numbers game.
Fighting one on one is always at a disadvantage compared to fighting many against one.

1v1 < 12 v 1

That's why we do death ball
