I have just enough cbills on my clan alt to pick up one new mech. I have been wanting the Mad Dogs and the Novas both so I am having a hard time deciding between the 2. Also, since I am a little strapped for cbills at the moment which variants have the best base load out so I don't have to spend a ton on upgrades right away?

Nova Prime, Nova C and I think the Nova S are the three most recommended Nova variants. The Mad Dog is nice but it has a limited role and bad geometry.

LRM Mad Dog is basically printing C-bills right out of the box. Of course, the Nova is really deadly, so you will make a lot of money if you're good with it, and 12cSPLs are really cheap. But any monkey with a joystick can earn loads of C-bills with the Mad Dog. The next question is which mech has more options for viable builds.
Nova: SPL boat, SL boat. 4 MGs if you want the sound and flashing lights. 2cERPPC poptart is ok, in the right hands. cERMLs are too hot, ballistics and missiles too heavy.
Mad Dog: Works well with cERMLs, cSLs or sSPLs in the arms. You can also run ballistics and I especially recommend 2cUAC5s. In the torso, you can have different combinations of cSRMs or cLRMs. Even streaks, if you lack balls. But you can even drop missiles all together and run lasers + ballistics in the arms. Not something I would recommend though.
Hardcore mode: Dual gauss Mad Dog C-variant. All the hawt MWO chicks will want to sleep with you.

Haha, I liked the dual gauss Vulture on TT. I unfortunately don't have the necessary skilz to make it work in MWO I don't believe.
I do like me some LRMS though and my Archers have performed really well for me despite their lackluster reception from the community in general. Definitely throws some weight toward the Mad Dog.

Mad dogs work well in FW drop decks, folks also use them as more armor streakboats to pad numbers for leader boards. Novas work well after elited in scouting. After that it is preference for specialist (nova) or generalist/missiles Maddog..

I just took advantage of the sale and bought 3 Mad Dogs. However, I have had Novas for a long time and they are my Medium of choice. Bear in mind that the Nova only does energy really, really well. If you are OK with that and enjoy jump jets then that is the way to go.
The Mad Dog can carry more diverse builds but suffers from poor hitboxes. I got it more for the nostalgia but I will Elite it when there is a good event running.

Thanks guys! I think I am going to go ahead and get the Mad Dog, I am torn between the prime and the one with all the missiles. Any suggestions?

Go for 6x ALRM5s and 5x SL. Just peak your head high enough to see the enemy and let it rain.
I know a lot of people like to use TAG to get more accuracy and be able to cut through ECM and save on weight but you have to expose your entire mech to use the TAG, which has screwed me over more times than I can count. Best to just upgrade your LRMs and pretend to be a submarine.
