I used ONLY the joystick in MW4 and it worked fairly well, using mouse or JS were both valid alternatives.

In MWO there is a fundamental difference, many weapons spread damage over time while in MW4 weapons were mostly hitscan, this makes the intrinsic greater tracking ability of mouse much more important:

MWO: Fire and track target for a second or so.
MW4: Wait for the target to be under reticle then fire, done.

The JS would allow for a more accurate piloting (keyboard only allows sharp turns) but that is not that important in MWO like it was in MW4.

i still use throttle and pedals for mech piloting, it really helps. but i still have a mouse in my right hand.

If this was to occur, anyone with half a brain would bring LRMs for the locking assistance. It would be an LRM/SSRM fest.

Which, admittedly, would be fun to watch. pls Youtube.

While I'm one of the mouse-and-keyboard peasants, I'd love to try the game with with VR and dual joysticks. Cannot imagine how bada** the immersion must be. Preferably I'd try it with everyone else running joystics too, though...

So mouse and keyboard is the "way to go" if you want to do well, but IMO if anyone wants to go with joysticks, knock yourself out as far as I'm concerned. You're probably destined to a perennial Tier-5 existence, but if you're having fun with the game, there's no problem is there?

bring this into the world of mechwarrior, you have a 15 ton gauss rifle on an arm. depending on distance from the actuators that gun might have to move a meter or two to traverse its firing arc. if you wanted instant snap to target with zero latency, you would have to grossly violate the laws of physics to do it. you would have to break the speed of light to move 15 tons (or any non zero mass) 2 meters in zero seconds. 2 meters in 2 seconds on the other hand is attainable. im sure if you had to wait 2 seconds for the crosshair to line up to your target, you would probibly not want to use a mouse for that job.

you probibly wouldnt want to use a typical gaming joystick either, those are more for controlling rate of rotation (and this is exactly what it does in mwo). what you want to control is position, or rather elevation and traverse angles, i imagine controlled with k n o b s* or a first order stick (gaming stick is 2nd order). this position would be marked on your hud and another indicator for where the gun is actually pointing. they would never completely converge, probibly enough to hit your target with a bit of jitter as the control algorithms and actuators struggle to hold the setpoint. you can control that setpoint with a mouse for sure but it would not be the instantaneous twitch maneuver that mwo players use.

* i cant say *****? wtf? is pgi racist against nobs you screen tapping hipsters! stop taking away my *****! how does pgi open doors?

This is the simulator like mechwarrior game I want and will never ever get.

I know it's not the same game as MW4 But I played MW4 with an X-52 joystick and throttle, and foot pedals, and at the time I was playing for one of the most competitive units out there. The difference is that MW4 was supposed to be a mech simulator game. MWO from the outset has been stated whilst it is a mech game, its not a mech simulator game.

I Sure do miss some of the simulator elements they decided to leave out, or only play lip service too.

Hello!

I've started to play the MWO resently and started to enjoy it!

During one game I remembered I have this old joystick controller (ST290pro) and started to have this urge to try it out.
After initial testing I started to admire those who could play "competitively" with them.
This made me to ask from myself; could it be possible for having arranged two sides to play together a match with joystick controllers (with legs controlled with the WASD) instead of mouses? And could the both sides agree to try playing with equal handicap with sensitivity of the controller in minimum?

Man! That would be one EPIC meta gaming match! xD

What do YOU folks think about this idea?

Comments and critique for this topic are welcome.

If I had 2 joysticks I'd be down...
Right now I just have one, and I use it for maneuvering in MWO, not targeting. I agree with everyone else that using a joystick for targeting is much less effective than using a mouse, but using it for movement is SO much better than WASD.

I've used a joystick in the left hand for throttle and leg movement. Mouse in right hand for aiming.

Here's what it adds:

Analog throttle movement. (I can turn a little bit or slowly with out it being choppy movements)

Lots of buttons to press! It is much more fun for me to launch an airstrike/UAV/themal vision by flipping a toggle switch on the joystick.

Immersion.

I find it the next best solution to pure joystick.

The fundamental issue with current joystick support comes from an issue within the game mechanics PGI decided to go with, and that fundamental issue is: Torso twist/pitch limiting.

Because PGI decided to limit Torso twist/pitch on a mech by mech basis, the most effective way to play with a joystick is effectively destroyed. Since it's simpler to lock the arm's to the torso and utilize torso/turn aiming entirely when using a HOTAS joystick setup.

Each and every mech preform's vastly differently due to this, and some are 100% unable to deal with light mechs which leg hug them while using a joystick [since they cannot pitch down enough to aim at the little ********.]

Back in Mechwarrior 2,3, and 4, I used HOTAS almost exclusively online if I had the option, and often times outperformed those who were staunch "mouse/keyboard FTW" players. But MWO's gameplay mechanics just don't allow for it, which is a shame... my poor X52 pro just get's no love these days because I can't mechstomp with it.
