Obviously it's not a MWO specific problem, but a "declining playerbase interest" type of deal.
What used to be "Patch Day Everyone!" with a pretty decent chunk of players on now is more like... "Patch Day... sigh" with few players on, with "at most" a 12 man for coms for a drop in the new patch (realistically like 4-6, yet that's still generous).
The only people that are always on are still the addicts, but these are actually the minority.
Welcome to MWO.

Well that's because you're forgetting the Steam statistics show only the Steam users. It doesn't account for all the non-steam users. Once you put that into account MWO is doing just fine.

Old games lose population, unlike when online games were few and far between, there seems to be a new one out every month or so.
Total war warhammer grabbed my attention for about two weeks, what a waste of money that was
WMO I suppose is in an inverse way lucky it had so few to start with, as it has less to lose and had a limited budget to start with

Yeah my friend had me try it out on his computer and I wasn't that impressed. Total War doesn't change much these days. I generally buy a Total War every 3 games or so now since Shogun (which I didn't like. I know, sue me). I find it's generally better to wait for the standalone expansions like Napoleon or Attila since you get to avoid all the LOL SEGA DEMANDS EARLY RELEASE bugs. They've had time to expand on the engine.

MWO has become quite boring even my tier1 main or my varied alt accounts tier 2-4 CW/FW has become a joke there is no real Social aspect to MWO or a new MSN gamming zone and good leagues so I just hang on and pay nothing now .

There's little point in logging on if almost every team you face has competent people and a lot of the teammates you spectate are trying to shoot targets 1000 m away with SRM's and look like they've never played this game before.

Or they just don't give a damn.

Also when I drop into a match, its usually mostly players I've never seen before. And I play just about everyday. Maybe you should add new friends!

About 1/3 of my contact list is on European time (probably another 1/4 to 1/3 active ForumWarriors), so usually we play in the morning when I am available. Of late? Ghost town.
During NA peak hours? I see maybe a dozen in green on a good day now?
Outside of the Big Comp Unit guys....has anyone else seen their Friendlist become a Graveyard?
I've had a hard time logging in, lately. The MM is garbage, the PSR is garbage, and the repetitive game play is garbage. FW is supposed to be the end game but it doesn't seem any different than what I'm playing in the Solo Queue.

People are not on the normal client for one, in the PEAK times for their timezone.
I know this is hurting out unit big time and has since the Tourney started, it's such a huge time commitment for Euro/NA people.

My friendlist is full of FW Marik dudes. And two dozen of them are always on during peak times. Enough of them we form Invasion team, less than that we form Scouting teams or PQ teams.

I don't think the PGI Tourney is culling that many people in general.. especially given the # that have dropped out.
A fair portion of the teams left are more comp oriented than non-comp oriented... which "should" make the queues have less of them, but it genuinely doesn't in the grand scheme of things.

Now?
It's not uncommon to have less than 12 total people active from my list. Primetime when I've got 60 or 70 active on my list it's less than 12 willing to play FW.
Don't worry though. Some largely irrelevant tweaks to Long Tom and some deckles will fix it.
