i want to start reading the battle tech books, i dont know where to start though. if you can start anywhere in the timeline i want to read about the FedCom civil war, or some stuff about the clans.
So my question to you is what should my first book be? Could I start with the FedCom civil war or should i start somewhere else?
Help would be greatly appreciated

+1. I wanna know this too. Or something about main history of IS and Clans. Why so many people hates them.

Decision At Thunder Rift. Go chronologically. Those first 3 Grey Death Legion books will tell you a lot about the battletech universe. Not so much the politics, rulers, etc, but the feel of it, the technology base, how society is functioning, etc. It'll put your head into the universe.

From there, just keep going. The Warrior trilogy is amazing, but do yourself a favor and read --nothing-- about it. No reviews, no synopsis, nothing. Don't.

Seriously, these books fly by. They're written for entertainment, not to be boring slogs. You can plow through one every week just reading a half hour before bed. Probably more.

I would recommend reading them by the order of number.
To not read the first books (the Gray Death Trillogy and the Warrior Trillogy) before the Clans arive (Blood of Kerensky trillogy) would be a shame.
I agree 120% with Buck!
The feeling of danger, politics and the sweet taste of victory you will get by reading the first 6 - 15 books can never be forgotten!

"This is a complete listing of BattleTech Novels in the order in which they should be read which is in approximately Chronological order, not when the books were actually published. "

Edit: Don't bother with the first one. It's apparently not good, and fetches up top $80 or more used. Decision At Thunder Rift can be yours for a buck or two used, and is dang fun.

Once you get a few books under your belt and want to know about the particular era MWO is based in, get the 20 Year Update. This was the last book published before the clan invasion and is an excellent primer for this era. It deals with history, major personalities, military deployments, has maps, etc. Just a really good resource.
