Now, explain, WHY are you disappointed?

These are no worse than decals in other games, using similar systems.

As the leader of the unit OMEGA mob, I immediately had to apply some of the OMEGA decals, colored in GOLD, on my Clan Ghostbear faction pattern
PS: now I only need a small "m" decal for compleating my units TAG

I was really hoping faction decals would be loyalty unlocked to. I hope they get it together a bit on this.
A major addition to the game that only took 4 years to get in. Why not make something of it.

It actually does fit very well in the classic battletech universe, this IP is a super kitschy 80's space opera. Unless you mean that MWO somehow should abandon the BT roots and transition into a more serious setting than previous battletech products, those decals are perfectly fitting.
I never understood the sentiment that battletech is supposed to somehow be an adult or realistic setting, it never was that. Just because you have grown old and perhaps want to justify still hanging on to a franchise designed for teenagers doesn't mean the IP should give up it's identity.
Battletech is and always was over the top, cheesy and lighthearted boy-dream type of setting, that's the whole beauty of it IMHO.

Specifically pertaining to the Smiley Faces decals : a long time ago I played the first edition of the MechWarrior RPG, and in the supplement for building mercenary units there was an illustration of a lance of 'Mechs with a frowning smiley face as the unit's icon ... totally canon.
Yes, playing with combat robots on the IntarCatTubez is "srius bidnez" (HA !), but the IP was indeed built to be cheesy, over the top and filled with inside jokes and trite references ... as were most games born in the 1980-1990 era.
Also, it is worth noting that nobody forces you to use them. I know that some of those decals don't do a thing for me, and that I will probably only buy one or two of those, maybe more if I'm in a facetious mood.
As always, vote with your wallet.

Where did you glean any of that information from Two Sentences?
Put words in people mouth much? I said it didn't seem to fit in, glad i got your panties bunched.
This is a Kin to Top hats and Mustaches which are usually implemented when the game is failing. If you ask me, maybe MWO is on it last leg? Maybe they just executed this pretty badly like they always do?
