So the Griffins are on sale I'm I'm hopping to grab a few. I have some builds lined up for what are my favorite 3 variants so far. Any other suggestions would be great.

First up is Sparky.

LLas and Mlas. Nothing fancy. LLas for range and Mlas for short range. Maybe I'd even go with ER Llas and make it into a longer range unit.

Next up is the 2N.

4 SRM4s and 2 Mlas. The quintessential ECM equipped SRM bomber.

Lastly a 3M.

4 LRM5s, TAG and a LPL. This would be a mid range, second line unit who would help to suppress the other team through chain fire or to land damage with a 4-piece LRM20. In my book, mediums make great LRM platforms due to their mobility and because they often aren't priority targets.

Is there a must have variant I should get instead of one of the ones I listed above?

So just going to go with works for me on the Sparky... Same except for, LL replaced with ERLL and one less ML for a HS. Then add a XL325. Over a 100 KPH with tweak and fire power, range and endurance.

Your 2N looks close to what I use for scouting. It works. I do sub an XL for more speed and another HS. I find that speed, endurance + firepower work well.

Get a XL for your Sparky and 2N as soon as you have C-bills. The Griffins really benefit more from that extra speed, especially with heavier clan mechs chasing after you. The extra heat capacity also helps big time!

You've picked out the correct 3 variants, but

The 3M has ridiculous structure quirks and SRM cooldown. It would be a damn shame to make it into a LRM boat.

I haven't had enough time with the 3N yet but so far I am definitely liking (and having the most success with) the 2N. Sparky is nice but I can't get into the right mindset wirg him. Maybe an XL with dual PPCs and SPL back ups? Maybe ER LLas?

If you're a fan of MPLs, you can run a huge XL engine with 6MPLs. Sparky is good with LLas, LPLs, LPL/ML, you name it, it does it well.

Without the PPC velocity, I would not recommend PPCs. Can be very difficult to handle.

That's true. I've not used PPCs on an unquirked mech in ages, TBH. I can't really imagine how bad they must be.

Is the Sparky's potential lost running ER LLas as a longer range unit versus a more mid range build?

I am successfully running my Sparky with a XL300, 2 LPLs in the torsos and 4 MLs in the arms. Give it a try, just 1 LPL missing in comparison to the IS laser boats WHM-6D and BL-6-KNT/... with 15 respectively 20 tons less weight!

Well, the Sparky is really, really mobile, so nothing wrong in running a long range build with which you can reposition fast. Posted Image
