Mercs should be hired by loyalists to take planets on their behalf.

your name on a leader board (we have one of those now)
rewards (mc, ranking rewards)
this is essentially what the planets mean. and there are ways to do that which do not divvy up populations to the point where its impossible to get a game on. if you participate in 5-10 victories a day, you deserve a reward equivalent to planet capture. you also get a victory point, which add up and go on the scoreboard.

Or Eridani Light Horse.
Or pretty much every major merc unit in BT lore.

Tagging planets is a motivator for MErcs to fight for different factions. It's the reward for a job well done. Perhaps you could elaborate on why you feel that should be removed for Mercs?
Personally I feel Mercs should have the tags and Loyalists should ave a general boost for all planets taken. Expanding the faction should benefit the whole faction regardless of who took it. That being said I dont know what kind of boon that should be and I find what we have right now to be fine.

It just seems fitting to me that Loyalists are the Faction itself, so they should own planets..
Loyalists should hire Mercs to work for them, with Cbills or MC, because they are Mercs.
I feel that Loyalists should have greater rewards overall, simply because they are committed to a factions.
I feel like this would solidify politics.
And I feel like Mercs, who never really have a commitment to anything, could be paid well if they build a reputation for being good at what they do.

Ahh mercs owned planets in lore? I didn't know that.
Sarcasm font engaged:
Yeah, in lore clans hired mercs to I guess.
In the lore, mercs changed factions every week too. In lore mercs had special rainbow bridge jumpships that could go from clan space to New Avalon near instantaneously, everyone else had to jump from system to system, taking months to move across the IS.
Don't forget that in lore everything was perfectly balanced and battles were always fought with perfect symmetry.
Sarcasm font off.
Since when did this game have ANY resemblance to lore or that this game mode was driven by "lore"?
Maybe lore become a concern after the second battle of Tukkayid, that mercs of Clan Wolf won...again.
I agree with OP. If we want the mode to be "FACTION PLAY" it ought to have something to do with FACTIONS other than them merely being the location that the merc units, which currently dominate the mode, decide where to fight each other.

ex. Making it that mercs lose bonuses from planets after they leave said faction.
That would incline mercs to stay in a faction longer if they have a good amount of planets that are tagged with them. Also would help with the flipping of major merc units that change population very quickly.

Huh, if a merc in CJF takes a planet does it end up as "merc faction" instead of CJF? Do they have their own map color? No?
They get a tag on it showing they were the unit who captured it for their employer and they get a significant bonus for the faction holding it.
Factions own planets. The unit taking the planet for the faction gets rewarded for their success. Loyalist or merc.

think about it, do you play invasion to stare at a map, or do you play invasion to, you know, play invasion. the rest is just an interface to get a game on. pgi's concept of a big war just doesn't work without a massive player base. it should all be replaced by a single lobby system, with a leaderboard and victory rewards. k.i.s.s.

The solution is 1.) an alliance system, and 2.) the complete removal of the Long Tom.. not that dumbed down NGNG BS craplution from people that don't even play god damned FP.

i would probibly do alliances in addition to a single lobby system. get it all down to 2-4 buckets. you dont need a match maker at all. you just get in the lobby and wait your turn (same system used in any planet lobby). in qp a matchmaker tries to match tonnage and skill, and fails at both. in fp you dont need to match tonnage because of the deck system. low population means you wouldn't even want to touch skill (also no way to pre rate groups, especially pugs). if you did any kind of matchmaker i would only touch group type (pile-o-pugs or 12 man), and only if the population permitted, which i highly doubt (even with the alliances and single lobby system).

We as the players are cogwheels in the system of the factions. No clan-galaxy or house-unit ever owned a planet.
If it is important for units to own something it should be a base on a planet(incl.bonus), not own the planet as a whole.

i think it was gifted to them or something like that.
an as for the claners owning something they did not own anything it all belonged to the clan even the people in the clan belonged to the clan
as of the IS i cant think of anything about the surats
