Are we talking group play, FW or PUGz eat rugz.
Assaults suck in pugz.
In a win beats all game group may still choose the Dwolf, but they will work with that player
for the most part mediums and heavies can work by themselves. Lights and assaults can easily die if their team does not now how to read a map.

Hmm. What mech would I choose in a win or die situation?
Overlord dropship.
What? You want me to go out there and get my behind shot off in a mech? Bugger that!

KDK 3
Too sad that, as a loyalist, I would rely on clantech, but this mech is the ultimate killing machine. Nothing else even comes close to it.

If all players face that choice the nature of the game and match would be completly changed.
Players would prioritize the ability to stay alife and at safe distance while also being able to defend themselves.
Players with half a brain would take mobile ecm mechs with decent speed, better or good hitboxes and either a mix of long range or short range weapons or all in all builds that allow them kill other mechs without having to expose themselves much.
The entire pace of the game would be changed as well. It is highly unlikely that you will have many desperados running to open ground.
The ones that do will die so quickly that the rest will play even more defensively.
Assault mechs would be a death trap. You would be a walking target with limited options. With an advantage in only a very narrow span of scenarios. Taking an assault or most heavies would diminish your srvival odds substantially.
There are other factors invovled.
It is likely though that this would turn out to be a defensive mid to long range sniper fest.
The way such a match would play out would also be hugely influenced by pug or group encounters. And even those well organized groups would probably play more defensively then the average pug team with all solo players in standard games like we have right now. Where u die and immediately start another game.
In the above scenario - if those factors are accounted for - fast, mobile, ecm-capable, good hitbox and mid to long range mechs/builds with decent hardpoints (preferably some or most very high at cockpit/sight level) to expose as little of your mech as possible.
The smarter players would use light or medium mechs that are ecm-capable and feature the just mentioned strengths.
Personally I might take the shadowcat but I would have to give it more thought and test things out a few months or years and come up with appropirate strategies. I would have to test several things under these new objectives.
Such a dicision cant be made just like that. That would mean death.

12 2X Gauss + 2X CERPPC would destroy 12 Lights/Mediums, any gear + ECM or not
More likely than not this would be a defensive stalemate with no one peeking, because with 12 bears on the watch, you can be well sure that at least half of them would hit you and that's 300 pinpoint damage, regardless what you're driving - you're dead
You can look at the B33f doing that with 12 KGC armed with Gauss, and how they slaughter all 48 enemy mechs with absolutely no chance for them to do anything
Coordinated pinpoint damage wins

To answer your question. Any reasonable person would bring a heavy for such a drop. Black Knight, Catapult, Hellbringer,...
A good mix of firepower, mobility and survivability.
Your discussion on assaults in the second part is not related to your thread's title. At the moment, assaults in game don't serve the purpose of giving maximum survivability. They are meant to function as spearhead. Offering enough protection to survive the initial onslaught during a push and give time for the rest of the team to follow suit and pound the enemy whilst taking over tanking duty,... But sadly not many the PUGs will use it that way.

Arctic Cheetah on release date (quirked version)
You just didnt die in that thing and you could kill stuff it was incredible.
I never had so many games were ALL my armor (except head) was gone and was still running around without a lost limb.
Due to the energy heat generation quirks you could even afford to but 6x ERML on it which gave you
so much range that nobody even hit you.

they still take quiet of a beating nowadays when you ask me.I can do stuff in the one i got (not mastered cause i am not so the light player) that my other lights woudnt survive.they are kinda forgiving to a good degree.

the funniest thing i saw in a vid, was on the old caustic valley map where a group of 12 all picked LRM boats. They wrecked the other teams you woudnt believe

Many variables.
If it's a pug match, and i can win by stalling the clock: Locust PB (top speed, ecm).
If it's a pug match, but i need to kill the enemy: BH2 ( PPFLD, jjs )
If i'm playing with a group of friends, most likely a fast medium with jjs to flank the red team: Crab-27sl / Vindicator-1aa. If our group has enough mediums already i would choose the BH2 or my old BLR-1G.
