Hi folks, my apologies if this belongs elsewhere, but as it's not specific to MWO (though certainly affecting it) I figured it was "Off Topic"!

Recently I decided that while my 9 year old Mobo & CPU were doing some good work & still not really complaining about it, that it might be nice to go higher than "Medium" on the old MWO visual settings, as well as actually being able to run some newer games at all.

So I bought myself an Asus Z97-P with an Intel I5 & 16Gb of RAM to go with the new Graphics Card I bought back near the start of the year when the 9 year old one said "nah thanks mate, I'm out".

Now, after some fun & games with drivers etc, the majority of things are working & I'm very happy with my nice, fast computer.

However, despite most definitely installing Windows 7 with the 64 Bit disk, I find that any installation of a 64 Bit program is not running. The cursor might give it the old "spinning thinky ring" for a bit, but nada.

Interestingly, 32 Bit MWO, Teamspeak 3 etc, all work fine.

I've done a bit of research but Google doesn't seem to be providing the answers this time & I was wondering if any of the tech savvy Mech jocks around these parts might have a thought or two?

In Summary:

Windows 7 - 64 Bit
Asus Z97-P
Intel i5 4690k Overclocked to 4.5Ghz
16Gb RAM
GTX 970

Issues:
  • 32 Bit Programs run a-okay, 64 Bit don't get much past the attempt to launch (tried in Admin mode too)
  • Whenever I start up, there is a dialogue box saying "Desktop Window Manager Stopped Working and was Closed" - Google has lots of answers to this one but none that have so far worked, perhaps its unrelated, but I mention it here in case it helps!
Thanks for your time folks, it is much appreciated!

A new bit of information for you!

Just tried running DXDiag, it starts up in 32 Bit, all fine there, DX11 installed, no worries, click the button to switch to 64 Bit DXDiag & hey presto, DXDiag has Stopped Working.

It's everything 64 Bit! I am baffled!

Can you confirm the legitimacy of your Windows purchase? Other than that, I would make sure that the BIOS's on the GPU and more importantly the Mobo have been brought up to current. That's some crazy **** man. Good luck, you'll need it.

I can indeed, its the same old CD set from years back, might be half the trouble to be honest as its one of the earliest copies of Win 7 you could have bought, a newer CD might be a little less update-intensive.

I'll recheck the Mobo & GPU, but part of my entire yesterday of computer related fun was getting both of those fully updated. Not to say I can't possibly have missed something!

Thanks for your time :)

Okay. It's fixed.

Time for some contrition...

Would you believe, that after a day of installing hardware, setting up & updating everything, after approving Windows 7 to install every last update it wanted to & restarting more than a few times for various drivers etc...

That Service Pack 1 had not been installed?

I kid you not. Fool me for thinking that would be included in the automatic updates, or that, were it not included in the initial batch, it might have showed after that wodge of updates had done its thing.

Nope. I, honourable clansman as I am, challenge the current owner of "The Dunce Hat" to a trial for possession of said Dunce Hat, it being woefully apparent that I am its trueborn destiny.

I'm off for a long walk to think about what I did. Then I need to go pick out a suitable colour scheme for all my mechs.
