I am just curious if there is anything a general scouter/long range sniper should utilize in a build. my sniper build right now:

Raven-4x:

2x ER PPC's

1 Dual Heat S

XL engine 275

Ferro fiber armor
dbl heatsink
endo-steel

Pretty basic, just wondering if the extra armor would be worth sacrificing for a ams, beagle probe, or tags/narcs that I should be using as this is my first mech.
Thanks

Nope and nope. Keep the armor.
You are a sniper, not a spotter.

Yeah keep that armor, if you want to be more of a hybridised team supporting sniper you could use the Meta 3L Raven 2xLarge laser which still maintains the ECM, quite costly to fit up with all the upgrades but from my experience its a good all around mech. (as is your current one)

edit: attached a link to the 3L build I used to run with an old unit, haven't really changed it much in almost 2 years, downgraded the Engine size for a bit more armor + BAP

4X laser sniper,
Drop BAP and take a sensor range boost module, the 4X has 2 mech module slots by default, means you have 3 mech, 2 weapon and 2 consumable slots one mastered. (i*d go, radar deprivation, advanced zoom, advanced sensor range + Er Large cooldown and range)
Detection range is 999 meter, optimal weapon range is 810 meter, i would advice to be as close to 800 meter as possible while not go below 800 meter.

Would not recommend PPCs since the raven gets cornered by lights and fast mediums easily.
Would not recommend Er-PPCs simply because the raven can not support the heatdispension to make them work.

If you're interested in electronic warfare (stealth scouting, spotting and/or narcing) the 3L is your mech.
The 3L has specific bonuses for NARC and generic bonuses for missiles (NARC is a typ of missile, obviously):

missile/NARC cooldown +10%
missile/NARC velocity: +10%
missile/NARC maximum range: +10%
additional NARC beacon range: +100 meter
additional NARC beacon duration: +15 seconds

This can be further enhanced by an enhanced NARC module giving an additional:

NARC volocity: +20%
NARC beacon duration: +30%

I would recommend you aim for 3L first as your first mech, it can fulfill more roles (Laser sniper, brawler, scout, TAG/NARCER) then the 4X (Laser sniper) and having the option to mount ECM (stealth suit) helps as long you can not afford (6 Million C-bills + 15.000 GXP) for a Radar Deprivation Module (a necessity once you get to play in mid tier).

Two ER PPC's are going to be difficult to manage with so few heat sinks. You'll have to sacrifice your engine size if you really want to run them, which is usually suicidal for a light mech.

If you really want to, this is probably the way to do it RVN-4X

The more common sniper raven will use ERLL RVN-4X

Lasty, if you haven't bought the mech yet but know you want to use Ravens get the 3L. Larger engine and ECM make it the most effective sniping raven. No jump jets though. RVN-3L

4X, not the best choice for the task for an energy-based sniper.

Consider the 2X instead.

This said, try XL 180 engine, AC/20, small laser, 3 tons of ammo.

And ditch Ferro because anything less than max armor with ferro is a waste.

---------

With the example build you did, you actually have 11 DHS.
The 250+ engine automatically has 10 DHS installed.

Twin ER PPCs is nice but hot. Consider 1 ER PPC and 1 Large Laser? This gives you options.
Alternatively, try twin PPCs, twin ER Large Lasers or twin Large Lasers. Still, genuinely recommend you use the Raven 2X as your sniper Raven instead of the 4X.
(Also why not just use a Gauss Rifle? if using the 4X?)

---------

Second edit:

http://mwo.smurfy-ne...ght_innersphere
Dug this out for you.

But in doing so I discovered something.
In what is likely an effort to reduce the number of overpowered Raven 4X's rapidly killing people by being walking AC/20 cannons...
They reduced laser duration for the 4X. Forgive the caps, it is how Smurfy writes its stuff.

RVN-2X ENERGY COOLDOWN: 15.00 % LARGE LASER HEAT GENERATION: -5.00 % ENERGY HEAT GENERATION: -10.00 % LASER DURATION: -15.00 % MISSILE COOLDOWN: 15.00 % TURN RATE: 10.00 % STRUCTURE BONUS (CT): 6.00 STRUCTURE BONUS (RT): 4.00 STRUCTURE BONUS (LT): 4.00 ARMOR BONUS (LA): 12.00 STRUCTURE BONUS (LA): 3.00 STRUCTURE BONUS (RA): 3.00 STRUCTURE BONUS (RL): 4.00 STRUCTURE BONUS (LL): 4.00

RVN-4X LASER DURATION: -30.00 % ENERGY RANGE: 10.00 % MISSILE COOLDOWN: 15.00 % MISSILE VELOCITY: 10.00 % ACCELERATION RATE: 25.00 % DECELERATION RATE: 25.00 % TURN RATE: 15.00 % TORSO TURN RATE (YAW): 20.00 % TORSO TURN ANGLE (YAW): 18.00 STRUCTURE BONUS (CT): 6.00 STRUCTURE BONUS (LT): 8.00 STRUCTURE BONUS (RT): 8.00 STRUCTURE BONUS (LA): 12.00 STRUCTURE BONUS (RA): 12.00 STRUCTURE BONUS (LL): 8.00 STRUCTURE BONUS (RL): 8.00

Ultimately you're still better off using the Raven 2X for energy based weapons especially ER PPCs (10% reduction on ER PPC heat is significant).
But if you were to use a laser weapon, you'd be pretty well on the Raven 4X between range increase and duration decrease (less 'HEY IM OVER HERE' time to spend flashing the laser).

Go with lasers. Evidently any lasers on your 4X. Save the PPCs for the Raven 2x. (Also what the heck happened the 4X ballistic quirks?)

(sorry to everyone that posted before me, i didnt get a chance to read previous posts.)

just came in to make a quick post, sorry if what i am saying has already been said before...

anyway, i dont think you have enough heat sinks to power 2 erppcs

also your a sniper, so adding things like bap or narc at the expense of armor is "probably" a bad idea.

while I dont personally drive a raven, so take what I said with a grain of salt- this is just what I think of at a glance

I'd say that a 2xER-PPC sniper Raven would be a super hard mode as a first 'mech. The weapons generate such tremendous heat that to be effective you can't afford to ever miss a shot really.

Nothing wrong with ER-PPC sniping, but wrong 'mech for the job IMO. Look e.g. into Blackjack BJ-3 which gets heat quirks and +50% velocity for the PPC's, and has the tonnage for much better heat management.

For the Raven 4x, I'd go with 2xERLL for sniping. It actually gets excellent quirks for the lasers (-30% duration and +10% range is pretty sweet). Looks like you could throw in max engine, max armour and max JJ's on top of the lasers. Alternatively go with fewer JJ's and add some DHS. Either way it's not a bad 'mech.

Thanks for the quick replies guys. I've decided maybe I should scrap the parts for possibly a guass rifle and pick up the RVN 2X for my energy sniping fetish because I think it is a lot of fun having two ER's, the way you have to lead your shots and stay hidden is great.

however, I did pick up the raven's Hero mech on sale and I'm curious as to what I could build on that. I think being a scout/tagger with the 3L RVN Could be a good style that I could really get into.
