i have shared internet with a couple other people and at times, whatever they are doing will cause my ping to go into the thousands, so i'd like to know before i commit to a drop if im going to just be a burden on the rest of the team as i run into them and generally not be of much use, specially with gauss rifles. is there a way i can check my ping before i click the quick game button?

F9 - I think it give you the x,y, and z location; ping and fps. I may not be correct with that but also you can check your ping in game by holding tab which brings up teams list and shows connected/disconnected, but it also shows the ping. The tab only works when in game and during the match.

When outside of a match you can hover your mouse over the Quickplay button and see your pings to each of MWO's three servers.. and check or uncheck those servers. (Like, I'm ~100 to NA and EU, but my SEA ping is sky high, so I uncheck it and never play there.)

He is correct, but I should warn you that quickplay button hovering ping and in-game ping can be different.

Also stay off of WiFi, it is a radio type signal that can be overcrowded by other modems nearby and even cell phones searching.
I had to bite the bullet and get the $30 long cable (life got better)
note you can look up how to get to router IP and set some limits for streaming content, hope you do not have an IT major in the house.
