To fill them? Purchase mechs for MC/C-Bills.

Buying them is the other alternative of course.
And the ingame store should show you the number of free mechbays when you get on the tab. Can't check it ATM but as far as I know it shows the number of free mechbays there too.

Yes I purchased a mech bay because I didn't know I had open slots... Nice way for them to make extra cash... Sigh.... I bought a package that I thought only came with 3 bays.

IMO, they are one of the only things that should be bought with MC. The other options for MC are cosmetics (camo patterns, colors and items for cockpit), Hero mechs, and Champion mechs. Here's a breakdown.
- Mech Bays: The F2P limiting factor. More mechs are just more fun to play with.
- Camo Patterns: One-shots are cheap, but just for that specific mech. One time application, so don't go changing it around or you're wasting MC!. Permanent unlocks are much more expensive, and unlock that pattern for all variants of that Mech (Ex. for all types of Raven).
- Colors: Expensive, but you can use the color for any mech you own. There are some CBill colors in there that can give you variety, however they aren't the best colors.
- Cockpit Items: For making your cockpit like a second home. These are often given away in events, or unlocked in supply cache. Not worth spending money on IMO.
- Decals: I don't know a whole lot about them, but they are a cosmetic item.
- Hero mechs: The only mechs which are only available for cash. They have unique hard points/quirks from other variants, but are almost never "OP". If so, they will probably get nerfed at some point, so the only real reason to buy them is if they have a play style different from the other variants of your favorite Chassis. They come with a +30% Cbill earnings bonus!
- Champion mechs: This is a fully equipped mech. It is the same exact variant also available for CBills. They have a +30% XP earned bonus, which helps you level this mech faster, and also applies to grinding GXP for unlocking modules etc. Not worth buying on their own for cash, but they also come in the mastery packs, so it's nice to have them sometimes.

The best way to get Mech Bays? Buy IS Mastery Bundles. The Locust package is $13.00. It comes with 3 Mechs, 3 mech bays and 30 days of Premium Time. 30 days of PT is $12.00 so this is a great deal. There are about 5 Mastery Bundles at $21.00 or less.
You buy them as Gifts and send them to yourself.
If you are a Clan member and do not want the Mechs, level them up, keep your favorite, strip and then sell the rest. If you are wondering why there are no Clan Mastery Bundles, it is because the world would explode if PGI sold a Clan bundle without...a HERO MECH.
Which is the best answer I've gotten on this issue.

Supply Caches are rip offs. I've opened 12 of them and only ONE time did I made more than the 50,000 C-Bills I could have sold it for. And each of these 12 had at least 3 very good items. It was like a bad Wheel of Fortune...the wheel almost stops at a good item, then rolls over to give you crap.

had about 10 so far got
1000 MC
2 Mech Bays
and some other mic stuff but for 250 MC in keys I made about 1350 in MC so not bad and the other stuff were modules and the like...
Kinda nice if you ask me but its like a gamble you win some then you lose some

"Mech Select" essentially gives you that picture barn when you choose "Owned." It is effectively a limiter of how many you can have.
I currently have a little over 200 bays. Short of unpredictable events, it is possible to get a total of 60-ish bays? 50 or 60 for free, though the amount of time that would take since it is entirely in the Faction Play and requires jumping from "loyalty" pledge to Loyalty pledge and leveling up to max with the 10 or so factions to get them all. I think "12" are pretty easy to get to but the rest take a bit.

But when you hit the BUY key, that clears up that misconception immediately unless you are clicky happy.
