Sounds good to me.
Cracks only appear in 1st person and can be toggled in the graphics settings
Nothing at 100% armour,
Light Cracks at 50% armour,
Heavy Cracks when you're down to internals.
Static effects should be fine since it rarely happens but a more advanced model with random cracks and propagation of those cracks as damage increases would obviously be preferable. Maybe use static effects as a test/basic implementation and put dynamic effects on the roadmap.
