USE the damn things. I use my prize consumables when skilling new mechs. Until I find the custom build I like most for a mech, I run my freebie consumables only in it.

I am in a similar situation. I have one Champion King Crab (challenge prize), one Mauler MX90 (I bought one variant then I focused on clans), one single Hunchback 4SP, two Timberwolves (I was saving C-bills for my third variant but then medium and light sales kicked in...) and one Artic Cheeta (from light sale).
I am uncertain on what to do: On one hand right now my focus is on expanding my clan mechs collection and the 35% off on Dire or Warhawk is VERY tempting, on the other hand maybe I should focus on the missing IS variants (Mauler and KC) to avoid that my mechbays are occupied by with single, unelited, variants.
Any suggestion?
I'll probabily grab some MC for bays and camo in the weekend.

Depends what you usually play - I'm usually in a heavy, so getting the Warhawk skilled up was by far a more enjoyable experience for me than the Dire.

Best variant is the 2C because it's the tankier one due to structure quirks. I have also the 1G (with LPLs) and 1S (as LRM boat)

Great event, but one month too early Would have been perfect after the Kodiak release for C-Bills. Still, the personal challenge portion is decent as usual. Will probably take my Hellbringer or Shadowcat out for a spin

Not sure about the IS tech, but the problem with the Clan assaults is that the Kodiak has largely made the Dire Wolf obsolete (this is of course arguable, but that's my view on the matter), and the Marauder IIC might as well make the Warhawk obsolete or relegate it to the lurm boat role. What remains is the Gargoyle, Executioner and Highlander IIC, and those have always been kinda niche mechs...

THEY ONLY DO MECH BAY SALES AROUND NEW YEARS

The closest you'll see otherwise during the rest of the year is the MC bundle deals which offer bonus mech bays, or MECHs with mech bays. This assault event has a concurrent repeat of the stock up with MC deal that ran during the mediums event two weeks ago, which some folks missed out on and commented thusly in the forums. The $15USD MC package gives you enough MC for 10 bays outright, plus includes a bonus bay and 5 caches (which might give you more bays... I've pulled 3 mech bays from caches). The $100 package gives you 38 caches (and keys), a dozen bonus bays, and enough MC to buy FIVE mastery bundles, which will give you 15 mechs, 15 bays, and five months of premium time (and possibly some cockpit doo-dads).

Vindicator pack is 4,990... and now a good buy because they've buffed them in recent quirk passes.

Locust pack is 3,184... and pirate's bane thanks to the shrinkage makes an excellent attack sub for
river colony and crimson tide. I would sell the basic mech from this pack after basic
skill levels are done.

Spider pack is 4,325... Anansi is a nice mix of lasers, mg's and an missile hardpoint, the K champion is a MG
and laser machine, and the 5D is one of the best ECM ERLL snipers around.

Commandos for 3,810 The champ and Hero are the fastest mechs in the game once you put in a 240XL it
They top out tweaked at 167 and the basic model included is the ECM capable one.

Jenner 4,715 Oxide is still fun to play, the champ comes with a 300XL so even if you owned one
already you could sell the chassis and keep its engine.

Ok so that totals 21,024. That still leaves MC enough for a couple single mechs or a bunch of bays.
