Disheartened with the Pokemon GO's mechanics (or rather, lack there of) I have been playing Pokemon Uranium for a couple days now. It is completely fan made and has the traditional battle system (I am assuming it is latest generation rule set). Plus online trading and PVP to boot! I recommend downloading it before Nintendo shuts it down (while free, they did borrow music and other assets).
With over a 100 new fan-made pokemon (with some of the original 151), 7+ gyms, and other misc side quests/tournaments it is a full fledged game. I haven't played a pokemon game for about 15 years and I was able to jump right in. I chose the water pokemon, Eletux, as my starter and it has been incredibly useful early game (if attacked with a physical hit, chance to paralyze enemy, brutal on lowlevel wilds). You are given 5 pokeballs to start and like every other villager in the first 2 towns will throw items your way. Difficulty does ramp up accordingly so it has been challenging but fun. Grinding my set of 6 pokemon for the third gym right now.
If you want to get the nostalgic feeling of a new pokemon game but you don't own a Nintendo system, this is the only way to fill that void. 10/10 would use all my potions and lose anyway again.
Note: The demand for this game is insane and the patch servers got rekt, so you will have to manually patch it.
Also, don't forget to get the secret gift pokemon from the main menu before you start a new game because there is no way to get back to main menu after you start. Ask me how I know...
Lastly, no Full Screen option but you can make it "big" in the options menu.

I was correct, Nintendo sent PU devs a takedown notice. They no longer have an "official" download link from their website but over 1.5 million downloads occurred before the takedown. PU dev team also stated that online PVP and trading are still operational and they will also release patches. So it is not dead but I doubt Nintendo will be satisfied with simple removal of a link. Get it while you still can or try to find a youtuber who is playing the 1.0 release if you are not comfortable downloading this fan made game.
